1876, Thomas Alva Edison opened a new laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. The most famous invention was born from the laboratory-the successful development of a practical incandescent lamp. By 1890, Edison had organized his various businesses into Edison General Electric Company.

1879, Elihu Thomson and Edwin J. Houston established competitor Thomson Houston Electric Company. 1892, under the arrangement of financier J.P. Morgan, these two big companies merged to form the General Electric Company, headquartered in Schenectady, new york.

1896, GE was one of the first 12 companies listed on the newly established Dow Jones Industrial Average. Ge is the only person alive today.
