The "Destiny" Symphony was produced in Beethoven's mature period of creation: 1803-1812. This period is also known as the "British Age" of Beethoven's creation. The heroic image established in the third "Hero" Symphony has been further developed in the fifth "Destiny" Symphony. The dramatic tension and brutality of the struggle have reached an unprecedented intensity. Beethoven's inner sharp and irreconcilable contradictions and various opposing emotional waves are vividly expressed. In terms of artistic achievements, it has reached a new level with more unified thoughts, more concentrated themes, and more rigorous forms. It has become a model work of classicism and is famous in history.
The Symphony of Destiny consists of 4 movements.
In the first movement, the straight-to-the-point "Destiny Knocks on the Door" motive serves as the core sound pattern to present the main theme. It roars out with the sound of a huge orchestra, which is evil and arrogant. But just as Beethovens shouted: "I want to strangle fate by the throat," the subjective and objective sides launched a thrilling battle. The sub-theme is introduced by the horn sound of the French horn, and the melody is lyrical and warm, soothing and refreshing. This is the ideal for which people fought bloody battles and sacrificed their lives. The theme of fate gradually takes over again, and the expansion begins. In the beginning, the two armies faced each other, and the sky was dark and the earth was dark as both sides fought. In the main theme of the current part, after the oboe whines like a war horse and mourns the cadenza, the hero stands up from the pool of blood again. With the support of the sub-theme "Ideals and Faith", a new battle begins again. In the grand finale, Beethoven's broad musical thinking continues to unfold. The first movement ends with a warm and exciting coda. In the first movement, sometimes evil fate prevails, sometimes the heroic voice is majestic and awe-inspiring. The road to victory is still long and the arduous struggle will continue.
The most brilliant lyrical poem in the second movement expresses the complexity and profundity of the subjective emotional world. Deep emotions, glorious ideals, and firm beliefs constitute the broad, calm characteristics of the first theme and the carol-like march-style melody of the second theme. The two themes eventually develop into a hymn of heroic spiritual power.
The third movement is the hero’s last struggle to defeat fate. The first theme is another profound depiction and portrayal of the hero's inner world, with mysterious soft sighs, turmoil, hesitation and even resignation intertwined with passionate and urgent impulses. The second theme is the transformation of destiny motivation, which has the meaning of deterrence and provocation. A folk dance-like, strong and passionate theme brings a fundamental turning point to the music, foreshadowing the hero's final victory.
The music enters the fourth movement without interruption. In the weak and unstable atmosphere, the sun suddenly breaks through the dark clouds and bursts out. This is a grand and magnificent triumphal march, and the mood of victory and carnival runs through the entire movement. Darkness will be defeated, light and victory are irresistible.
