Background:

This poem was written by Li Bai when he visited Luocheng (i.e. Luoyang) in the 23rd year of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty (735). Luoyang was a very prosperous city in the Tang Dynasty and was called the Eastern Capital. At that time, Li Bai was living in Luo City. He was probably in an inn when he accidentally heard the sound of the flute and his hometown sentiment was triggered, so he wrote this poem.
