First movement of Grand Canyon Suite Sunrise

This is a landscape painting of sunrise in the desert. The morning glow sprinkled the dark night with colorful spots of dawn. When the sun rises from the horizon, its radiant light announces the arrival of a new day.

The soft rolling timpani sound symbolizes the restlessness of dawn; the bright piccolo brings the first bird call; the light of dawn paints the Grand Canyon with a golden glow. The English pipes play the theme of the chapter.

This deep and elegant melody slowly spread to other parts, and repeated alternately, from weak to strong... Finally, the whole band played to the climax: a red sun rising over the Colorado River. The sky above brought a light to the earth; the Grand Canyon ushered in a new day of its own glorious and eternal rose...

The music started with a slight rolling on the timpani, and this hazy sound depicted the The darkness before dawn. Then the addition of a sustain on the violin and a rising pattern on the clarinet brings life to the music - it evokes the sweet bird-like sound of the piccolo. This is the initial revelation of the movement's theme motive, which, after being fleshed out by the flute, forms the complete sunrise theme played by the solo English pipe.

While this theme is repeated on the flute and English pipe, its shape is also constantly changing, suggesting the various colors and heroic appearances of the Grand Canyon under different lights. And when this theme finally developed into a beautiful and lyrical chant of string instruments, it was like a red sun bursting out, emitting thousands of golden lights, and the music suddenly became broad and bright.

The ending is the climax of the entire movement. The two previous themes are reproduced one after another with the support of percussion and brass instruments, showing a landscape painting of the Grand Canyon painted in bright and colorful tones─ Under the bright sunshine, the rock walls of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River at the bottom of the valley look dazzling and shining.
