Tiananmen Square, formerly known as Chengtianmen, was founded in Yongle/KOOC-0/5 (A.D./KOOC-0/4/KOOC-0/7) and completed in Yongle/KOOC-0/8 (A.D./KOOC-0/42/KOOC-0/8). The building was destroyed by lightning in the first year of Tianshun in Ming Dynasty (AD 1456). After the Qing Dynasty, in the eighth year of Shunzhi (165 1), Fu Lin, the ancestor of the Qing Dynasty, ordered a large-scale reconstruction on the ruins of the original site and renamed it Tiananmen Square. Taking this name means "live up to heaven and defend our country."
