Japan's Arctic Research Base in Svalbard Islands

In recent years, in order to promote the study of the Arctic, Japan established the Arctic Circle Environmental Research Center in the National Polar Research Institute 1990. The center is mainly engaged in the study of atmospheric and marine environmental changes centered on Arctic sea ice. At present, it mainly studies aurora observation, Greenland ice sheet drilling and Bering sea ice ecology.

In the afternoon, I visited Japan Station. The sign at the entrance of the Japanese station turned out to be that their base was built 199 1, very early. China Railway Station was only opened in 2004. Japan station is located next to a small airport, two miles from where we eat every day, and we have to drive back and forth. Moreover, there is no water in the Japanese station in winter (the water pipes are frozen), which is very inconvenient for scientific research and life.

This instrument is on the roof of the Japanese railway station, observing the sun, and can automatically track the sun, but now it can only "sleep" at midnight:

This is an all-sky camera, which is used to observe the changes of clouds over the North Pole. Pay attention to the black iron sheet next to it, which is very practical and can block out the sun. Because of the high sensitivity of the camera, if sunlight comes in, it will damage the CCD, which can automatically track the position of the sun and block the sun;

Japan Station can accommodate up to 7 explorers at the same time, because there are only 7 beds, of which the stationmaster's room is a separate room, and the other rooms are dormitories for 2-4 people. Compared with China Station, China Huanghe Station is a separate bedroom for everyone. However, we should also see that most of the space in the Japanese station is used as a laboratory, while most of the space in the China station is a bedroom. The real laboratory covers an area much lower than that of the Japanese station;

Overall impression: Although Japan Railway Station was built earlier, its facilities are all right. What impressed me most was that their equipment was very advanced, and some equipment could be left unattended. In fact, most of the instruments of China's polar expedition were made with Japanese help. As scientific researchers, we should calmly and soberly see our own gap. At present, the number of doctors graduated and the number of SCI articles published in China far exceeds that of Japan, but Japan is far ahead of China in science and technology.
