Haidian Book City was a bustling place in the old society. On the north side of the book city, it used to be the Tiger Cave Hutong in Haidian Town, which is a commercial street. Due to the strong cultural atmosphere around Haidian Bookstore and the concentration of many universities and research institutes, it stands out in the site selection. The original ecological culture of Zhongguancun in Haidian has been given a chance to develop. By 1992, Jihai Building opened here, and the whole block was officially renamed as "China Haidian Bookstore"; Later, the Haohai Building was built, forming the present book city scale.

In the glorious period, the number of daily running water reached hundreds of thousands.

As the most representative characteristic commercial street in Haidian District, China Haidian Book City has a history of nearly 20 years, with a daily flow of hundreds of thousands of people. Here is a collection of excellent books and periodicals from all over the country, which is the first choice for buying books in Beijing. The archway of "China Haidian Bookstore" witnessed the glory of the bookstore in this period.

After the completion of Louhai and Haohai Building, the two main buildings of Bookstore, some properties were sold to some units and individuals in the name of "permanent use right". Other old house industries in Bookstore were also transformed by different leading units, either by themselves or jointly, which promoted the prosperity of Bookstore, but also caused many problems in this respect, such as complex property rights, excessive autonomy in operation, and the use of public resources without management.

From 65438 to 0999, the construction of the North Fourth Ring Road began, and the book city was cut off by the middle, and the area was greatly reduced. In addition, at this time, Zhongguancun West began to step up construction, and residents around Haidian Bookstore began to move out in large numbers. Various factors have led to the decline of Haidian Book City.

With the rise of cultural and creative industries, Haidian Book City has finally ushered in a new life.

On May 28th, 2005, Zhongguancun Creative Industry Pilot Base with Haidian Book City as the core was established, which is the first creative industry base in Beijing. In order to build Haidian Bookstore into a veritable core area of creative industry base and a well-known brand of Beijing culture and commerce featuring book culture management and creative industry in China, Haidian District Government decided to transform Haidian Bookstore. The renovation plan was launched in July this year. It is estimated that by the end of the year, the book business circle, as the core of Zhongguancun's original ecological culture and commerce, will rebuild its past glory with a brand-new look. By then, the "Commercial Street with Book Culture Characteristics" will be listed at the same time and become one of the commercial streets with Beijing 10 characteristics. The whole area is called Zhongguancun Cultural Square. The completed cultural square covers an area of nearly 5 hectares with a total construction area of 220,000 square meters. It is a large-scale comprehensive cultural business circle, which is dominated by book sales and integrates cultural products sales, stationery sales, leisure, catering, entertainment and other consumption and services.

In the process of rebuilding the characteristic commercial street of Haidian Book City, the municipal facilities in the street will strive to reflect the modern and humanized design orientation.

In design, the gray brick wall in old Beijing has been revived. The hollowed-out gray wall is made up of various tiles, and the blue-gray painted water forms the background of the architectural image of the whole block, which makes people feel a kind of simplicity and elegance that washes away lead.

Although the characteristic commercial street of Haidian Book City is an external space, it can give people a feeling of being in a "quadrangle", which makes people feel kind and relaxed. This scale relationship is a kind of preservation and inheritance of the traditional architectural space of Haidian Bookstore's characteristic commercial street, which is in sharp contrast with the surrounding modern architectural scale.

After heavy make-up, Haidian Book City will become a unique cultural consumption and creative industry center in Zhongguancun, forming a new urban dating place integrating books, education, fitness, fashion and catering.
