In Qin Dynasty, Gangnan belonged to Guilin County. At the end of Qin dynasty, it was renamed Yuzhou. From the Han Dynasty to the Southern and Northern Dynasties, Song and Qi belonged to Yulin County. From 558 to 589, it belonged to Nandingzhou.

Sui Kainan Dingzhou was changed to Yinzhou, so it belongs to Yinzhou. In the second year of Daye, it was called Yulin County, which belongs to Guangzhou with Madu County. Zhenguan changed to Guizhou in the ninth year of Tang Dynasty, and belonged to Guizhou in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.

In the Qing Dynasty, it was still called Gui County, which was the capital of Zhou Xun.
