The legend of Fangfeng is popular in Huzhou City, Shaoxing City, Jinhua City, Hangzhou City and the vast urban and rural folk literature in the Taihu Lake Basin in southern Jiangsu Province. It is one of the national intangible cultural heritages.
The prototype of the legend of Fangfeng originated from the sacrificial ceremony in rice farming. Due to the arrival of the flood, the witchcraft in the sacrifice failed and gradually became a myth and legend. Although its internal structure and symbolic meaning coincide with the legend of Dayu and inherit the spirit of Calix Horse in the traditional political and cultural space, as a local folklore, it expresses the people's resistance to the central authority in the form of resentment.
