2. History of Guiping City
Guiping has a long history and has long been the residence of state-level local units. The Qin and Han Dynasties were under the jurisdiction of Guilin County. According to historical records, Guilin County was once near the center of Guiping today (but there is no substantial archaeological evidence to prove it). After that, Guiping was classified as Bushan County, and Guiping was governed by Bushan County. Guiping also belonged to Yulin County for a long period of time. The "Guiping" organizational system was established in the Liang Dynasty in the Southern and Northern Dynasties. This is the "Zhou Xun" in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Because it is located at the intersection of the two rivers, the waterway is convenient.
Guiping was once a commercial port in eastern Guangxi, second only to Wuzhou, and played an important role in the passage of southwest commodities in and out of Guangdong. In the middle and late Qing Dynasty, Guiping was one of the most important cities in Guangxi, which coexisted with Yong (Nanning), Wu (Wuzhou), Yu (Yulin), Gui (Guilin), Ping (Pingle) and Qing (Qingyuan, Hechi). During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Zhou Xun administered Guiping, Pingnan, Wuxuan and Guixian. Among them, Zhou Xun District governs the city, and Guiping County governs the city. The government and county governments are all in the area of Xianfu Street in the old city of Guiping today (commonly known as "T-junction" by locals).
After the 20th century, Guiping's status declined because of the changes in traffic conditions (the passage of roads and railways and the decline of water transport) and the implementation of planned economy after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Later, it came under the jurisdiction of Yulin area. 1994 May 18 was approved by the State Council to withdraw from the county and set up a city as a county-level Guiping city. After the establishment of prefecture-level Guigang City, it was "managed" by Guigang City. Because of the change of administrative divisions, wuxuan county was placed under the prefecture-level Liuzhou City (Laibin was upgraded to a prefecture-level city in 2002), and Pingnan County was set up independently (under the prefecture-level Guigang City), which is the predecessor of today's prefecture-level Guigang City.
