From the end of the Warring States to the Tang and Song Dynasties (even to the Ming Dynasty in some places), a peculiar burial custom-cliff burial was popular in Enshi Prefecture. Cliff burial culture in Enshi Prefecture is one of the burial styles of ancient minorities in southern China. According to relevant scholars' research, its ethnic groups should be Pu, Liao and Yue, where Pu, Liao and Yue are inextricably linked with Ba culture and Tujia culture. Cliff burial can be roughly divided into three types: one is hanging coffins, that is, nailing piles on cliffs to put coffins. The second is rock mound: also known as cliff burial, that is, using natural rock mound to place coffins. The third type is the tomb of rocks: that is, caves are artificially drilled on rocks as tombs. Rock tombs in Enshi Prefecture are mainly distributed in Jianshi and Lichuan. Just to the west of Qiyue Mountain in Lichuan, more than ten remains of this kind of rock tombs have been found, all of which were artificially excavated on red sandstone as hiding places, among which Ziyan Kong Tomb No.7 in Lichuan is the most typical.
The site of "Seven Holes" Cliff Cave Tomb is located on the red sand cliff on the east bank of Jiannan River, 2.5 kilometers west of Jiannan Town, Lichuan City. The top of the square hole is dome-shaped, the middle height is about 1. 1 m, the side height is about 0.8 m, and the room width is1.4 m. The local villagers once took out the boat-shaped coffin from the cave and filled it with human bones. Later, the cultural relics investigation team took out a box coffin from the cave, which was 0.7 meters long and contained human bones. This is a "second burial" or "deboning burial". According to legend, in ancient times, the Queen Mother stopped at this mountain and saw Tujia people living in huts, hunting for a living, naked and hungry. In order to let them live a good life without killing, the Queen Mother herself went down the mountain and taught them the techniques of male ploughing and female weaving. After the death of the Queen Mother, Tujia people learned to plow and cultivate land, woven Xilankapu and lived a happy life.
