Evolution of administrative divisions in Chongming area

During the Wude period of the Tang Dynasty, Chongming Island went out of the river and was called Dongsha and Xisha.

In 696 AD (the first year of Long Live the Tang Dynasty), people began to live on the island.

In 705 AD (the first year of Shenlong in the Tang Dynasty), a town was set up in Xisha, named Chongming ("Chong" means high, and "Ming" means wide, flat, clear and flat ground above the water surface).
