Seaweed house is one of the most representative ecological houses in the world, which has the advantages of warm in winter and cool in summer and comfortable living. Mainly distributed in the coastal areas of Jiaodong Peninsula. Algae houses are made of thick stones and usually have two roofs and a triangular roof in the shape of a crib. The roof is covered with dried seaweed, and the thickest part is 4 meters. The roof slopes at an angle of 50 degrees from left to right, and the side facing the sea is usually covered with fishing nets. Small heavy objects such as stones are used as pendants. Now more and more young people who used to live by the sea are pouring into the city. Even if they live in the village, they would rather choose a spacious and bright big tile house. The house with red bricks and tiles has quietly replaced the seaweed house.
According to textual research, seaweed houses gradually formed and spread widely in Jiaodong Peninsula from Qin and Han Dynasties to Song and Jin Dynasties, and entered a prosperous period in Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Up to now, it has a history of 1000 years, and is considered to be the most original and seafood residence in Jiaodong Peninsula. In the material selection of seagrass houses, the "seagrass" used to build seagrass houses is not ordinary seaweed, but wild seaweed such as seagrass growing in shallow water of 5~ 10 meters. Seaweed is green when fresh, and turns purple-brown after drying, which is very elastic. Because the seaweed growing in the sea contains a lot of halogen and gum, using it to make thick roofs has the characteristics of moth-proof, mildew-proof and incombustible, and it also has the advantages of being warm in winter and cool in summer, comfortable to live in and indestructible for a hundred years, which is deeply loved by local residents.
The construction of seagrass house is divided into five steps (cornice, roof sloping, capping, watering and leveling), with more than 70 processes, all made by hand. Only the local old craftsmen are familiar with these crafts, and with the passage of time, this craft is gradually lost. There are two main forms of technology, one is flat connection and the other is random connection. Because it is purely manual technology, the construction period is very long, and one person can only build 2 square meters a day. The key step to build a seaweed house is to cover the roof with seaweed, which is also called "thatched house" by locals. In fact, the principle of thatched houses has something in common with the installation of tiles in tile houses, except that thatched houses are made of seaweed layer by layer from bottom to top.
