At that time, an Anhui businessman, Cheng Mou, came to the pool and learned that the old monk picked bones and chewed betel nuts to avoid filth, so as to relieve the plague and rebuild his home. The habit of chewing betel nut continued and developed. Since then, Xiangtan people have forged an indissoluble bond with betel nut. The custom of chewing betel nut was gradually introduced into central and northern Hunan.
