Pingjiang road evaluation
Pingjiang Road Historic Block was listed as a historical and cultural protection area in the overall planning of Suzhou adopted by 1986. Over the years, local governments have made great efforts to protect this 800-year-old ancient road. From 2002 to 2004, the landscape protection and environmental improvement project of Pingjiang Road was implemented in Suzhou. By removing illegal buildings, laying pipelines, laying slate roads, dredging rivers and maintaining old houses, the main part of Pingjiang Road was restored to its original appearance. Because of the excellent protection work, the evaluation of the UNESCO jury on the protection planning of this area is: "This project is an example of urban renewal, and its outstanding performance in the protection of historical features, the maintenance of social structure and the implementation of operation mode proves that historical blocks can move towards sustainable development." It is precisely because it abides by the principle of repairing the old as before that Pingjiang Road has not moved its residents out for large-scale commercial development, so it exudes a life atmosphere different from Beijing Houhai, Yangshuo West Street and Old Town of Lijiang.
