The Historical Evolution of Xuhui District
According to historical records, Xu Guangqi, a great scholar and famous scientist in the late Ming Dynasty, set up a farm near the confluence of Zhaojiabang and Li Zongjing, engaged in agricultural experiments and wrote books, and cooperated with Italian and European missionary Matteo Ricci to create a precedent for cultural exchanges between China and the West. Later, the Xu family lived here for generations, so it was called Xujiahui, hence the name of the district.

The Tang, Five Dynasties and Song Dynasties belonged to Huating County, while the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties belonged to Shanghai County. In the second year of Xuantong in Qing Dynasty (19 10), it belongs to Shanghai County, and belongs to Shanghai, Fahua Township and caohejing Township. In the third year of the Republic of China (19 14), the French Concession was expanded for the third time. In 33 years of the Republic of China (1944), it was under the jurisdiction of Shanghai Special City, belonging to fourth area, the seventh district and the eighth district (former French Concession). After the victory of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the district belongs to the seventh district (Changshu District), the eighth district (Xujiahui District) and the 26th district (Longhua District). In 36 years of the Republic of China (1947), the serial numbers of the revoked districts were directly called Changshu District, Xuhui District and Longhua District.
