In the first year of Jiayou in Song Renzong (A.D. 1056), Su Shi and Su Zhe went to Beijing with their father Su Xun and were appreciated by Ouyang Xiu, the literary leader at that time. In the second year of Jiayou, 19-year-old Su Zhe and his brother Su Shi won the Jinshi together.
