Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty recruited envoys and sent them to the Yue clan to attack the Huns. Zhang Qian recruited envoys to Chang 'an. After being captured by Xiongnu, he escaped after being trapped for ten years. He went west to Dayuan, through Kangzhou, to Da Yue, and then to Dacha. He stayed for more than a year before coming back.
On the way back, in order to avoid being discovered by Xiongnu, Zhang Qian diverted to Nanshan. But he was still captured by the Huns and held for more than a year. In the third year of Yuanshuo (BC 126), the Huns took the opportunity to escape to the Han Dynasty, and reported the situation of the Western Regions to Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty in detail. Because of Zhang Qian's high prestige in the Western Regions, the envoys sent to the Western Regions by the Han Dynasty were often called Bo Wanghou to win the trust of the vassal states.
