Shenyang Conservatory of Music is the only higher music and art college in Northeast China. The school is a national college student cultural quality education base and a higher education institution. The school’s Red Classic Art Education Demonstration Base, the National School Art Education Advanced Unit, the Liaoning Provincial Art Talent Training Base, and the Liaoning Humanities and Social Sciences Key Research Base have been designated as a key construction institution in Liaoning Province by the Liaoning Provincial People’s Government.
The predecessor of Shenyang Conservatory of Music can be traced back to Lu Xun Art Institute. Lu Xun Art Institute was founded in Yan'an in April 1938 by Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and others. It was the first higher art institute founded by the Communist Party of China. In 1949, it was renamed Northeast Lu Xun Institute of Literature and Art.
In 1953, Northeast Music College was established on the basis of the Music Department of Northeast Lu Xun Institute of Literature and Art. In 1958, it was renamed Shenyang Conservatory of Music.
