It was not until 1969 that the BBC and Record Retailer jointly created a more professional Top 50 list. The first list was officially released on February 12 of that year. In 1978, the singles chart increased from Top 50 to Top 75. In 1987, the development of the British Singles Chart was basically the same as it is now. Sales statistics were stopped every Saturday and the chart was released every Sunday afternoon.
The earliest album chart was created by Record Mirror magazine on July 28, 1956. The original list only had Top 5. On November 8, 1958, the Melody Maker magazine began to publish a weekly The top 10 list was regarded as the official ranking at the time. Starting from March 12, 1960, the official British pop music album chart was officially launched. Two weeks later, the list increased from Top 10 to Top 20. On April 16, 1966, the list increased to Top 30. By the end of the same year, the album chart had reached the top 40. Like the singles chart, the British pop album chart did not stabilize until the late 1980s.
