Introduction to Baizi Opera

Baizi Opera is one of the Han opera types popular in Shanwei City (Hailufeng), Guangdong Province. Baizi opera has a long history. In the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties (or earlier), it flowed from southern Fujian to eastern Guangdong and arrived in Hailufeng. It was combined with local dialects and folk art, and gradually formed Hailufeng Baizi opera with strong local characteristics. The music singing style is basically a couplet of tunes, supplemented by folk songs and minor tunes. Because singing songs often use "Ah Yi Ai" to line up the lyrics and enhance the tune, it is also called "Ah Yi Ai". Later, it absorbed Han folk arts such as bamboo horses, money drums, and fishermen's songs and music, and gradually formed its own style and characteristics. One of the three rare operas in Shanwei City. Baizi opera type. After Zhengzi Opera was introduced to southern Fujian and eastern Guangdong, it was gradually formed by combining it with local Chao Tune, Quan Tune and Han folk art, and singing in dialects. The local people call the Zhongzhou Mandarin "Zhengzi" and the local dialect "Baizi", hence the name Baizi Opera. The original Baizi operas of Laobaizi (local opera in southern Fujian), Chaozhou Baizi (now called Chaozhou opera) and Nanxiabaizi do not have the "Ah Yi Ai" liner notes, which is different from (Hai Lu Feng Baizi Opera). Baizi Opera is popular in Shanwei City, Guangdong and parts of cities and counties such as Huidong, Huilai and Zijin. In the early years, if the Baizi opera was performed in the same place as the Zhengzi opera, the Zhengzi opera would always be in the main shed, while the Baizi opera would be in the side shed. When performed on the same stage, the Zhengzi opera would be performed in the first half of the night and the Baizi opera in the second half of the night, which was called "midnight reversal"; among the people, this was not the case. There is a proverb that "positive letters give birth to white characters". It has many similarities with Liyuan Opera in terms of repertoire, singing, and language, especially Teochew opera. The two have different dialects, different singing methods, and different music. Hailufeng Baizi Opera uses the local Hoklo dialect (learned from Singing in Lao dialect), the Hailufeng dialect of Shanwei City comes from the Southern Fujian system just like the Chaoshan dialect. On May 20, 2006, Baizi Opera was approved by the State Council to be included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists.
