Recommended routes for self-driving tours in the Northwest

If you want to take a road trip to the Northwest, there are several routes you can try. You can find what you want from the following ways. Of course, you can redesign the route to your liking.

Gannan Line

Route length: 12 to 15 days, about 1,240 kilometers.

When to go: June to August or early October

The best scenic road section: Gahai-Maqu section

Gannan is where the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau extends to Gansu's secret place retains its original and rich landscape. Temples, villages, grasslands, lakes, rivers, peaks, and canyons have different shapes but are perfectly integrated. When driving in Gannan, all you need to do is use your wheels to measure the scene that appeared in your dream.

1. Lanzhou

“The Yellow River is full of water, and the beef noodles are fragrant day and night” is probably the best comment here. Lanzhou's large and small scenic spots and landmark buildings, such as Waterwheel Park, Zhongshan Railway Bridge, Baitashan Park, etc., are mostly concentrated on Binhe Road along the Yellow River. Different from the bad traffic and chaotic crowds in the south of the city, when you get here, you can calm down and enjoy the "Lanzhou Bund".

2. Linxia

Linxia, ??also known as "Mecca", has many mosques and Gongbei on the streets. Walking through this small town, you can clearly hear the "Bunk" sound of God calling believers from the mosque. The rich Hehuang culture and rich Western Region characteristics here set off a unique temperament.

If you are interested in history and culture, Donggongguan and Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture Museum are your windows to understand the historical stories of this city. Then, you can stroll deep into the buildings of Bafang and Thirteen Lanes, feel the unique architectural art styles of Bafang and Hezhou, and look for traces of the dusty years.

3. Xiahe

Xiahe is the first stop from Lanzhou to Gannan. Labrang Monastery on the Daxia River is like an ideal city, with dense Tibetan-style buildings occupying most of the land in the western part of Xiahe County. Known as the "Tibetan Academy of Tibetan Studies in the World", it has a complete Tibetan Buddhist teaching system.

The other two temples in Xiahe are Jiaohong Temple and Nu Temple, which can be reached by walking northwest from the small road in Wangmi Square for half an hour. If you have enough time, you can also visit Gangjia Township, 30 kilometers north of Xiahe. There are holy places in the eyes of the locals, namely Baishi Cliff and the highly designed Bajiao City.

4. Sanke Grassland

Sangke Grassland is very popular with self-driving tourists, especially in July and August. It is full of wild flowers, spacious and quiet, dotted with cattle, sheep and horses. This is already a relatively mature scenic spot for tourism development, but if you go deep into the grassland, you can still find a simple scene with wind-swept grass and cows and sheep.

The newly built plank road and several viewing platforms can help you have a panoramic view of the mountains, grasslands and wetlands. If you visit carefully, it may take half a day here; if you are in a hurry, you can stop at the observation deck on the roadside when driving by, and you can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of the grassland.

5. Lu Qu

Lu Qu means "Tao River" in Tibetan. The Tao River and Bailong River originate from Luqu, nourishing large alpine meadows. In this pastoral county with a predominantly Tibetan population, large herds of cattle and sheep can often be seen occupying the road lanes and walking slowly in the middle of the road. Most self-driving tourists will not stop here, but it will be more convenient to visit scenic spots such as Stone Forest and Gahai from here.

6. Gahai

"Ga" means "small", but Gahai is the largest freshwater lake in Gannan and an important wetland in the eastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Known as the "Pearl of the Plateau". In late spring and early summer, flocks of white swans, gray geese and bar-headed geese fly from southern China and Southeast Asia. It is also one of the important breeding habitats for the black-necked crane, a national first-level protected animal (visible from April to early May).

At present, the north side of Gahai has been developed into a scenic spot. You can walk from the grassland to the lake along the stone road and wooden plank road. There are two viewing platforms at the end of the plank road. From them, you can overlook the dark blue mirror-like lake and the snowy peaks and green grass in the distance. In summer, wildflowers spread across the endless grasslands, and flocks of birds rise and fall by the lake between the water and the meadows, presenting a particularly pure landscape.

7. Maqu

Many people come here because of its reputation as the first song of the Yellow River. If you want to see the beauty of the Yellow River, you might as well go to Gongselkamu Road in Awancang Township and climb to the observation deck to see the basin centered on the confluence of Gongqu, Serqu, Daojiqu and the Yellow River. grassland area.

After leaving Awancang Township, you can continue driving eastward along the Yellow River for about 70 kilometers to Qihama Township and Cairima Township. The scenery here is praised as "China's Amazon" by Yang Xianhui, the author of "Gannan Chronicle". The meandering rivers on the plateau are like a waltz dance, meandering on the vast flat alpine meadows.

8. Langmusi

It is another secret place northwest of Langmusi, known as "Oriental Switzerland". Langmusi is not a temple, but actually refers to the town of Langmusi, located at the junction of Sichuan and Gansu provinces. Bailongjiang, one of the three major rivers in Gannan, originates here and divides the town into two. The south of the Yangtze River belongs to Sichuan Province, and the north of the Yangtze River belongs to Gansu Province.

What makes this place famous are the two monasteries. One is located in Sichuan, called Okuranamogaldi Temple. It is one of the largest and most influential Gelug sect temples in Aba, Sichuan. The mountain behind the temple is the entrance to the Namo Grand Canyon, and some short walks start from here. Another temple is located in Gansu Province, called Dazanglangmusi Gansu Temple (also known as Saichi Temple). It is one of the branch temples of Drepung Monastery in Tibet and also belongs to the Gelug Sect.

9. Tiebu Sika Deer Nature Reserve

When you arrive in Chonger Township, you enter the boundary of Tiebu Sika Deer Nature Reserve. With high mountains and deep valleys, a relatively warm climate and lush forest vegetation, it is the only habitat in the world for Tibetan sika deer (also known as Sichuan sika deer). Currently, there are more than 1,000 deer in the reserve.

10. Zhagana

Zhagana means "stone box" in Tibetan. Small Tibetan villages surrounded by towering stone mountains are arranged in layers along the highland barley terraces and surrounded by dense and verdant forests. The stream at the foot of the mountain winds out of the rugged canyon, accompanied by the mist that rises from time to time, like a mysterious fairyland left on earth.

The four Tibetan villages in Shicheng are arranged from west to east, from high to low. Their names are Tiba, Dari, Kim Ye-rim, and Dong-wa. There is Lasang Temple in Dongwa Village, which was built in the early Qing Dynasty. From here, you can explore scenic spots deep in the stone forest on foot or on horseback, such as Fairy Beach, Fairy Lake, Tiger's Mouth, Yixian Sky, etc. The location of Ye Village is suitable for taking pictures of the sunrise, and the rock viewing platform on the back mountain has a good perspective overlooking Dongwa Village.

1. Damo Mountain

The Damo Mountain located at the tail end of the northeastern mountains of Zoige County belongs to the remnants of the Qinling Mountains and extends westward into the county. Although few travelers go to this mountain, it is a geomantic treasure place in the hearts of local people. In Bodhidharma Village, which has only about 30 households on the mountain, there are seven famous living Buddhas with surnames. During Tibetan festivals, a large number of believers go to the mountains to worship. On weekdays, this mountain village is like a paradise.

12. Coincidence

Diebu was called "Diezhou" in ancient times, which means "thumb" in Tibetan. Legend has it that this is where the Tibetan mountain god Negandawa opened it with his thumb. Bailongjiang River is located at the intersection of Minshan Mountain and Loess Plateau, running through the county from northwest to southeast.

Go east along Provincial Highway S313, enter Niqiangou, and go straight to the mountaintop viewing platform. From the observation deck, you can see Cuomeifeng, the highest peak in Gannan, with snow-capped peaks towering into the clouds.

13. Zhang Fangyuan Mountain

Laga Mountain means "the place favored by gods" in Tibetan. You can drive to the top of the mountain from Panshan Road. On this winding road, the altitude rises from 1,400 meters to 2,800 meters. With the mist drifting from the mountains, various scenery such as rolling waterfalls, quiet canyons, dense forests, broad grasslands, clear lakes, stacked Tibetan villages, etc. are constantly changing before your eyes.

14. Lazikou

Lazikou is the gateway to the border between China and Tibet, meaning "steep mountain road canyon". If you want to prove the steepness of Lazikou, you might as well go through the two winding mountain roads in Tiechili. The nearly 20 kilometers of S-shaped winding mountain road has 27 turns, but the beautiful scenery along the way is a reward for the brave.

Because

It is located at the intersection of the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the branches of Minshan Mountain and Qinling Mountains. The scenery of Guan'egou will make you glad you have been there. The nine canyons between the mountains are steep and deep. The ancient pines on the cliffs block out the sky and the sun. There are many strange peaks and dense forests. There are also many waterfalls cascading down from the top of the mountain or the cliffs halfway up the mountain. Sometimes you can see all four seasons in one day.

16. Dayugou National Forest Park

Dagougou is the general name of Jiugou (canyon). The ditch is surrounded by towering cliffs, dense trees and clear water.

In addition, the unique vegetation and climate form a unique landscape of "one mountain with four seasons, ten miles apart", attracting many Gansu locals to come here to escape the heat in midsummer, or to watch the colorful gradient of the forest here in late autumn.

After entering the scenic spot, you will reach a fork in the road, with Gajiao Valley on the left. During the tour, you will pass through five stone gates and go straight along the river to reach the Zagana Stone Forest. On the right is Qibu Valley, which contains Tibetan farmhouses and Qibu Temple.

7. Qioni

The county seat is located on the banks of the Tao River, one of the three major river systems in southern Jiangxi. The Riba Buddha Monument on the south bank of the Tao River overlooks this small Tibetan-style county. Zhuoni is the Chinese transliteration of the Tibetan word "Juenai", which means two masson pine trees. It is worth mentioning that the Tibetan costumes here are also called "Juenai" and have a unique aristocratic style during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

About half a kilometer northwest of the county, the Zen Temple on the mountain is the oldest Tibetan Buddhist temple in Gannan, more than 450 years older than the Labrang Temple in Xiahe. Gongba Temple (more than 60 kilometers southwest of Yoni County) is surrounded by green mountains and Cheba River and is large in scale. It's worth driving there to be greeted by its majesty and tranquility.

Leaving the county and heading north, you will pass the rapeseed flower viewing platform and terraced fields at an altitude of 2,662 meters. The colors and shapes are layered, like a palette, intoxicating.

18. Lintan

Known as the ancient Zhou Tao, it is located at the intersection of the Loess Plateau and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in southern Gansu. Yeliguan Scenic Area and the Weicheng ruins of ancient Zhou Tao are more famous. The tug-of-war for thousands of people on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month and the Zhoutao Flower and Song Festival in the sixth lunar month are carnivals for Lintan people and are also the busiest times of the year.

Drive northwest along Provincial Highway S306 to Hehe. This is a beautiful road that is easily missed by self-driving tourists. You will be immersed in the vast Renmei Prairie and Wanmao Prairie. Especially in summer, the sea of ??flowers becomes the protagonist of the grassland, and sometimes cattle and sheep cross the road. It is the essence of Gannan self-driving road.

9. Cooperation

The word "cooperation" comes from the transliteration of the Tibetan word "Heicuo", which means "the place where antelopes roam". In ancient times, there was a dense forest where antelopes lived. I came here mainly to have a glimpse of the Mirage Eight Buddha Pavilion. The Buddhist Pavilion is located in the Hehe Temple on the mountain north of the city. It is the only nine-story Buddhist pavilion in the entire Tibetan area dedicated to the founders of various sects of Tibetan Buddhism. Standing on the Buddhist pavilion, you can see the platform on the opposite mountain, which is Maugham's sunbathing platform. Look at the place with prayer flags and houses on the mountain on the right, which is the sky burial platform in the cooperation area.

If you come here from July to August, you can also visit the grassland during that week, 2 kilometers south of the city. Gannan Shambhala Tourism Art Festival is held here every year. During the festival, you can watch Guozhuang dance, equestrian and other folk performances, taste Tibetan snacks, and experience the lively and rich ethnic festival atmosphere.

Hundreds of millions of years ago, this was a huge lake. After continuous polishing by wind erosion and running water, the unique and sculptural Yadan landform has been formed. The total length of roads in the scenic area is 9.8 kilometers and there are not many bus stops. If you are in good health, it is best to visit on foot. 4. Burqin

Most people will regard Burqin as the outpost to enter Kanas. The town is both beautiful and cozy.

Whether it is the "European-style" buildings or the flower and plant sculptures on the street, they will give you a refreshing feeling.

Rainbow Beach is the highlight here, with its undulating colorful landforms. The scenic spot is located along the highway on the north bank of the Irtysh River. Every day at sunset, the boardwalk is crowded with people watching the colorful rainbow beaches in the afterglow.

Jiayu, a mountain basin surrounded by spruce and larch, is regarded as the gateway to Kanas Scenic Area. You can drive to the ticket station to buy tickets for Kanas. Your car can only park here, but it is safe and you can start your fantasy journey as much as you want. It is about 29 kilometers from Jiadengyu Ticket Station to the terminal station, Kanas Transfer Center. You can only take the scenic shuttle bus (8:00~19:30; round trip 90 yuan; stops at Wolong Bay, Shenxian Bay, and Moon Bay). The shuttle bus takes 50 to 60 minutes to travel along Provincial Highway S232.

6. Kana (Japanese letters; simplified from Chinese characters)

Kanas between mountains and rivers is the most popular attraction in northern Xinjiang, and there are rumors of "lake monsters" It became famous all of a sudden. But just looking at the color of Kanas Lake is enough to shock you. The lake water will show different colors such as blue, gray, emerald, dark green, milk green and so on in different seasons. After entering September, golden birch leaves, apricot larch, fiery European poplars, and evergreen pines and cypresses line up in rows. It is a fairy tale world. That's right.

The tour can be divided into two parts: Kanas River and Kanas Lake. Wolong Bay, Moon Bay and Shenxian Bay belong to the three major landscapes of Kanas River. Get off the train at Wolong Bay and walk north along the valley along the plank road to visit three major attractions. The one-way trip is 5.4 kilometers with nice scenery along the way. Wolong Bay is the first stop after taking the shuttle bus into the scenic spot from Jiadeng Island. This section of the river is very wide, with a river beach in the middle.

From the plank road next to Wolong Bay, walk 2.2km north along the river to Moon Bay, where the river bend forms an S-shaped curve, like a crescent falling into the valley. There are two grassy shoals on the shallow shoal in the north, referred to as "Genghis Khan's footprints". From Moon Bay, continue walking 3.2 kilometers north along the plank road to the most famous Shenxian Bay, where you can see the morning fog. Shenxian Bay is the widest part of Kanas River (700 meters). It is surrounded by clouds, mountains, lakes and trees, giving people the feeling of being in a fairyland.

7. Baihaba

Going to Baihaba requires a border defense permit, which can be obtained with your ID card at the scenic area public security bureau (9:00~19:30) next to the tourist service center. The fee is 1 yuan and can only be done on the day of the trip.

Baihaba Village, known as the "No. 1 Village in the Northwest" (May to October 15; 50 yuan), is located in northwest China, 1.5 kilometers away from the border between China and Kazakhstan. In late autumn, the leaves of white haba, birch, larch and poplar gradually turn from golden to red, making it a fairy tale-like border town. Enjoy the beautiful sunset on the hillside behind the old village. There is a "golden avenue" behind the old village in autumn (in front of the Mongolian Primary School). The birch trees on both sides of the street form a golden arcade, and the ground is covered with a thick "golden carpet".

8. Hemu

Hemu Township is divided into Hemu Lower Village, Hemu Upper Village, Hemu New Village and Hemu Mountain Village. Shangcun and Xiacun are the core areas and also the concentrated areas for food and accommodation. The locals collectively call it the old village. If you deliberately look for a harmonious attraction, you may be disappointed, but there are attractions everywhere in the village. The highest mountain in the north of Hemu Village is Meili Peak. There is a village up there with only a dozen Kazakh families. In July, wildflowers abound.

There is an observation deck on the hillside on the north bank of the Hemu River, where you can take pictures of the Hemu Valley and the morning fog. There are bridges between Xiacun and Xincun, and there are walking paths leading to the viewing platform. The harmonious morning scenery is beautiful and cold. When it's time to go out, the sun rises around 7:30 and the morning fog disperses at 8 o'clock. It takes up to half an hour to walk from the old village to the observation deck, but if you want a good shooting location, you have to arrive early.

9. Keketuohai Town

The history of Tuohai Town is not long. The first residents began to move in after the discovery of mineral resources in the 20th century, and it has now evolved into a tourist town. The streets of the town are filled with shops selling rare and precious minerals, with aquamarine and tourmaline being local specialties. Drive 5 kilometers east of Keketuohai Town along the Y235 rural road and you will reach the Irtysh Grand Canyon. You need to take a shuttle bus to enter the scenic spot. The terminal is Chongshan Mountain, which is 17 kilometers into the canyon.

The Grand Canyon is more than 70 kilometers long, with granite peaks facing each other along the river.

The shape of the heavy mountain is like a huge bell, with a steep and smooth surface. There is a plank road on the opposite side leading to the observation deck on the mountainside. This is a good angle for taking heavy photos.

10. Colorful City

Cai Wuwan generally refers to a large hilly area near the G216 National Highway. Caiwu is located on the east side of the Junggar Basin and is the core of Caiwu Bay. It has a large number of colorful hills of varying sizes, dominated by deep red with layers of gold, gray and brown. The fantastic scenery of Colorful Bay has attracted many photography enthusiasts, and film and television works such as "Suwu Shepherd" have also been shot here.

11. Wucaiwan Ancient Sea Hot Spring

From Wucai City to Wucaiwan Ancient Sea Hot Spring. On the right side of the road is the view of Huoshao Mountain, an ocher mountain made of sintered rock that is colorful in the morning and evening. The hot spring is divided into one large pool and four small pools. It is very pleasant to soak in the water at night and watch the stars while admiring the snowflakes falling on the water in winter.

Tangbo Ancient Road

Route length: 7-10 days, about 1873 kilometers.

When to go: May to October

Best section: Yushu to Luwu Banner

Start from Xining and cross the border between Tang Dynasty and Tubo After the mountain (Riyue Mountain), we began to enter the Tibetan area. The theme of the first half of the journey is the Yellow River. First go to *** and experience the vast Longyangxia Reservoir, and then go to the "source of the Yellow River" thousands of miles away. Then spend a day or two practicing in Yushu. After continuing southbound, Nangqian and Luwuqi were the highlights of the second half of the journey. There are not only stunning scenery here, but also Tibetan customs that are rarely disturbed by outsiders.

1. Huangyuan

Starting from Xining, you can choose the G0612 West Highway with less traffic to get to Huangyuan. Huangyuan is a prosperous town that has been the choke point for Han Chinese to enter Tibet since ancient times. You can stop by Tuanjia Ancient Town in the county seat. This is a newly renovated Chinese-style "ancient city", named after the Tuanjia Hall built here during the Qing Dynasty.

2. Riyue Mountain

Riyue Mountain has important geographical significance. This was once the boundary mountain between Tang Dynasty and Tubo, as well as the boundary between monsoon and non-monsoon areas, agricultural civilization and nomadic civilization, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Loess Plateau. Riyue Mountain Scenic Area is a man-made scenic area based on Princess Wencheng's marriage to Tibet. The Riyue Mountain Pass is 3,520 meters above sea level, and the Sun and Moon Pavilions are located on both sides of the mountain pass.

3. ***He County

***He County is the seat of the capital of Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, with an altitude of "only" 2,850 meters. It is wise to rest here for one night so that the body can gradually adapt to the high altitude environment

Amaqing Mountain is one of the four sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism. Zhihai Diaikou is 4,600 meters above sea level. Here you can see the majestic appearance of the main peak Ma Qinggang. Although the height of the main peak of 6,282 meters is not outstanding among the many mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, it is very natural to have an illusion about the height in front of you (you may even think it is more than 8,000 meters high). The Maqinggang sky here presents a towering state with steep walls. Then arrive at Huashi Gorge, which was once the most important transportation hub in Goluo Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. With the opening of the Hua-Jiu Expressway, its hub status has been gradually weakened. If it's getting late here, you might as well rest for a while.

5. Maidu Fish

Visit the source base of the Yellow River. Maduo is 4,300 meters above sea level, with dry air and huge temperature differences between day and night. Tibetans who live at lower altitudes will suffer from altitude sickness here. It is recommended to go to Maduo to replenish water and avoid strenuous activities. You can go to the Lingesar Cultural Expo Park on South Street of the County. There are various statues and murals about King Gesar in the park.

The Yellow River Source Scenic Area consists of Zhaling Lake, Eling Lake and Niutou Monument. The observation deck of Eling Lake is built on a high cliff near the lake, where you can overlook Eling Lake from a high position. When the weather is nice, the lake is a dreamy sapphire blue with dazzling stars twinkling on the surface. Everything is like a dream.

The shores of Eling Lake are also a paradise for wild animals. Herds of Tibetan antelopes or Tibetan wild ass can often be seen here. Continue to reach the Bull Head Back. The Yellow River Source Monument is built on the top of Cuowari Mountain at an altitude of 4,610 meters. Hu Yaobang and the 10th Panchen Lama inscribed "The Source of the Yellow River" in Chinese and Tibetan respectively. When the weather is good, you can also have a panoramic view of the two lakes.

6. Yushu

Yushu is 3,700 meters above sea level.

For travelers who have just come down from Mado, this is a suitable place to rest and adjust. You might as well go to the Jiegu Temple on the top of Muma Mountain. It is not only the Sakya Temple, but also a good place overlooking the urban area of ??Yushu. Another place where you can see the new side of the city is at the Contemporary Mountain Observation Deck.

Take the G214 National Highway from Yushu to the city and drive about 16 kilometers to Princess Wencheng Temple. After passing the basin, we climbed over the Galaga Pass and entered the landscape section, sometimes climbing over the mountain peaks and sometimes going deep into the canyon. The 112km road from the mountain pass to Nangqian is full of beautiful scenery, among which the scenery near the Juelongga Canyon is the most beautiful. The scenery on the road is worth stopping for more than half a day.

7. Be humble

For travelers who like original ecology, Nangqian is paradise. There are almost no tours in Nangqian, and there is no place in the county to collect tickets. The only tourist facilities currently are the signboards on the national highway.

When the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Hengduan Mountains meet, they form a magnificent and beautiful scenery, and the Gale Temple Grand Canyon is one of the best. The primeval forest in the canyon grows among the green grass, and the special light and shadow effects brought by the flowing fog make it seem like a dream.

Gar Temple is located on the mountainside deep in the canyon. From a distance, it looks like a "city in the sky" suspended in the air. If you want to experience the purest style of Nangqian, then the historic (Jiao) Temple will not let you down. Jiusi Temple was once the family temple of Nangqian Qianren, ranking first among all the temples under the jurisdiction of Qianren's residence. The huge Mani stone pile in front of the temple is the highlight of the entire temple. The prayer wheel corridor surrounding the Mani stone pile has gone through many vicissitudes. Tibetans come here all year round.

8. Like Wuqi

The most interesting thing about Luwuqi is the Luwuqi Temple, 25 kilometers northwest of the county. The main hall, Chagyemma Hall, has long been famous in Tibet. There is a folk song in eastern Tibet: "Go to Lhasa first for pilgrimage, and then go to Chagyemma. If you come to Chagyemma first, you can think about it after you arrive in Lhasa." Entering the hall, you can see exquisite Buddha statues and thangkas everywhere.

9. Dingqing

Dingqing, the hometown of Cordyceps Sinensis, is not very attractive to travelers, but the largest, earliest and most faithful temple in Tibet - Zheluo Temple is located In the eastern part of the county, it is definitely worth your half-day trip. Zongbao Style

Nagqu City, an important town in northern Tibet, has an altitude of 4,525 meters. It is the highest, coldest and windiest "city" in Tibet. Walking on the street, there is not a single tree in sight, which shows the harsh natural environment here. Nagqu City exists more as a transportation hub in travel plans, and traveling from Qinghai to Lhasa cannot be avoided.
