The script of "Cats" is based on the British poet Thomas Sterns Eliot's collection of poems "The Book of Old Cats Who Are Good at Dressing Up". This poem was written by Eliot for children, so the verses are simpler than his other poems. Much easier to understand. The poem was completed in October 1939, but the creation of the musical "Cats" began in 1977, a gap of 38 years.

The famous musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber began arranging music for "The Good Dressed Cat" in 1977. He did so entirely out of his deep appreciation for the poem he read as a child. interest. At first, Weber only planned to write some loose pieces to be performed on the stage, and had no idea of ????creating a musical. Because this poem has no dramatic plot and no dramatic tension, it does not meet the conditions for creation as a musical.

He wrote many fragments of this poem and often played it to his friends on the piano at parties. At the 1980 Edmonton Festival, Weber performed several excerpts he had written. Eliot's widow, Valerie Eliot, also attended the festival and brought Weber many of Eliot's unpublished poems and stories. These poems included the later very famous "Charming Cat - Grizebella". The reason why Eliot did not include this completed poem in his poems was because he felt that this poem was good for children. It's so sad. But it was such a poem that brought the inspiration for the musical to Weber. He felt that the experience of "Charming Cat Grizebella" was the theme of the story. If added, it could form a music with a beginning and an end. drama. So, after many efforts, "Cats" officially debuted on May 11, 1981, premiering at the New London Theatre. As expected from the beginning, everyone was not optimistic about the prospects of "Cats". It was always believed that staging a musical based on a children's poem would only bring disastrous consequences. Even the day before the performance, the theater troupe failed to raise enough investment sponsorship. The owner of the theater was frustrated and even wanted to withdraw from the contract. Everyone knows what happened next. The premiere of "Cats" became an instant hit and became a musical that attracted worldwide attention. Those who nervously invested in the "Cats" drama received back hundreds or thousands of times in return. No one expected that "Cats" would become the longest-running musical to date, and no one expected that a musical that is not based on plot could be so touching.
