Chen Guoquan adapted it from the orchestral overture "Ode to the Red Flag" by Lu Qiming. "Ode to the Red Flag" takes the red flag as its theme and depicts the scene when the first five-star red flag was raised on October 1, 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded. It has been sung and played on many occasions, including the 2009 military parade.
