Shanxi University has a music school.

The School of Music of Shanxi University is the only college in Shanxi Province that cultivates senior music professionals. Its predecessor was Shanxi Art Institute founded in 1958. It was merged into Shanxi University in 1962 and the music major of Shanxi University Art Department was established. The Department of Music was established in 1990 and expanded into the School of Music in 1996. The college currently has six departments: Theory of Composition, Piano, Vocal Music, Folk Music, Orchestral Music, and Dance, and an art research institute. It has four undergraduate majors: Musicology, Composition and Composition Technology Theory, Music Performance, and Dance Choreography, and five postgraduate degree programs in Musicology, Art, Drama and Opera, Dance, and Master of Arts. The school currently has 11 professors, 20 associate professors, 37 lecturers, and 7 teaching assistants. It also employs experts from the Central Conservatory of Music, China Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, as well as from the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, and Canada. More than 20 experts from , Japan and other countries serve as part-time (visiting) professors. There are currently more than 1,000 students on campus, including more than 700 undergraduates and more than 300 graduate students.

In the past five years, nearly one hundred teachers and students of our college have won awards in national professional competitions. The college choir has won gold medals in international competitions. The college's philharmonic orchestra, folk orchestra, and dance troupe also enjoy high reputations in the province. In recent years, the college has actively carried out teaching reforms in accordance with the needs of social development and has made breakthrough progress. Adopting advanced credit system management, we have formed a variety of music and art talent training models such as performance type, theory type, and compound type, with remarkable teaching results.
