Morning bells and evening drums
Refer to the sound of bells and drums in temples telling the time in the morning and evening. The metaphor can make people alert and awaken, and it can also describe the passage of time. For example, Lu You's "The world is full of sorrow for a hundred years, and the bells in the morning and the drums in the evening never stop." It also refers to the time telling method in the city in ancient times (except Han and Wei).
