Confucius said that Zheng Shengyao embodied what thoughts of Confucius

The emphasis on the principles of "no evil thoughts", "joy but not obscenity, sadness but not sadness" reflects Confucius's "neutral" attitude.

Out of the need to maintain etiquette and social stability, Confucius put forward the proposition that "Zheng Sheng is obscene". Zheng Sheng's "obscenity" lies in the fact that it violates the five tones regulations in form; it is unrestrained in content, which has a strong impact on the rigid ritual and music system.

Confucius positioned the meaning of life in the present world, transforming limited individual life into the infinite extension of racial life. What he was most concerned about was how to coordinate the relationship between individuals and groups, maintain the existing situation, and stabilize social order. Protect the survival of the species.

He thus constructed a theory of music aesthetics with the idea of ??neutrality as the core. Neutral is the unity and harmony of form and content, neutrality is the premise, harmony is the result, neutrality is the core, and there is Harmony must be in the middle; harmony is inevitable in the middle, and harmony must be in the middle. Gentleness and kindness are the expression of neutrality.

In our investigation of Zheng Sheng’s four “promiscuous” behaviors, we should understand from Confucius’ deep hatred of Zheng Sheng’s illegal and transgressive behavior (violating the etiquette of the Zhou Dynasty and destroying orthodox elegant music) in the Analects of Confucius. The Zheng Sheng mentioned is not only the music and melody of Zheng Di, but also includes the content of the lyrics - that is, the "Zheng Feng" itself such as "Qin Wei". These should also be the two major connotations of the concept of "Zheng Feng".

These two connotations complement each other, and together they caused Zheng Feng's "obscenity", which even made Master Confucius, who was known for his gentleness and elegance, jump up and curse.

It's just Zheng Sheng - this is considered "reactionary music" and "yellow music" by orthodox Confucian scholars, but today it is regarded as popular popular music.

(In contemporary times, even the words "reactionary music" and "yellow music" have faded from the social context.) And the ancient music that Confucius, Zixia, Mencius and others worked hard to protect—— Yayue must be a lullaby composed of eight-part tunes and a lullaby that is stable, not sullen, and boring.

No wonder Wei Wenhou "fears to lie down when listening to ancient music; listening to the music of Zheng and Wei, he is tireless" (Book of Rites·Book of Music). As for the "Analects of Confucius: Shuer", Confucius "heard "Shao" in Qi" (heard the elegant music "Shao" in Qi State), and actually reached the point of "not knowing the taste of meat in three months" (not knowing the taste of meat for a long time - —Having been immersed in the music of "Shao") is simply incredible!

However, as the founder of Confucianism, Confucius stuck to his beliefs, was loyal to his theories, and was persistent in his ideals; no matter how the world changed, he dared to hate, love, praise, and criticize; No matter how rich or noble you are, you cannot be immoral, you cannot move when you are poor or humble, and you cannot bend when you are powerful. This is a precious spirit that is worthy of learning and carrying forward by future generations.
