In the first few years in Paris, Xian Xinghai mainly supported himself by working as a handyman in restaurants and other places. According to Ma Sicong's introduction, he once studied violin with Oberdorfer, the concertmaster of the Paris Opera House Orchestra. The violinist learned that Xian Xinghai relied on small jobs to make a living, so he refused to charge him tuition. Then, Xian Xinghai studied composition theory from the famous professor Gallon at the Paris Conservatoire.
When Professor Gallon learned that he lived in poverty, he did not charge him tuition fees. Amidst the suffering of such a painful life, Xian Xinghai successfully created "Wind". The piece was praised by his teachers. Due to his works and the introduction of others, Xian Xinghai met the famous composer Paul Ducat and was admitted to Ducat's advanced composition class at the Paris Conservatory of Music.
Among the Chinese students studying music there at the time, he was the only one to pass the advanced composition class and receive an honorary award. The school wanted to give him a material reward and asked him what he wanted. His answer was: "Meal stamps." So, the school gave him a stack of meal stamps.
