The theory of music performance has been explored in many aspects at home and abroad in ancient and modern times, including special studies on the performance styles, specific instruments and vocal techniques of each period, scattered in numerous documents. In China, there are many ancient records discussing performances. Particular attention should be paid to the treatises on opera and guqin performance after the Yuan Dynasty, such as "On Singing" written by Zhi'an in the Yuan Dynasty, "Qin Kuang" written by Xu Shangying in the Ming Dynasty, "Yuefu Chuansheng" written by Xu Dachun in the Qing Dynasty and Jiang Wenxun's "Pure Notes on Qin Xue" and so on. The more noteworthy theoretical books on the general theory of performing arts and the general history of music performance in the West since the 20th century include: Haas's "History of Musical Performance", Dorian's "History of Musical Performance", Dart's "The Interpretation of Music", Westrup's "Musical Interpretation" etc.
