Yangge, also known as "Twist Yangge", is a popular entertainment dance form among the northern ethnic groups. It was originally a primitive dance that imitated rice farming labor, and later became a costume performance during farm breaks or during new year's festivals. There are two types of northern yangko, one is performed with legs tied to high wooden poles, called "walking on stilts"; the other is performed on flat ground, called "dibengzi".

People of all ages and genders can perform the Yangko dance. They dress up in costumes and swing colorful fans. Dozens or hundreds of people line up and dance to the accompaniment of gongs, drums and suonas in the streets, alleys or squares. In some yangko teams, beautiful girls dress up as boatmen, young men dress up as old men pushing carts, children dress up as big-headed babies, and old men dress up as Tang Monk, Zhu Bajie and other ancient figures. The one riding a donkey backwards, the one carrying a flower basket, etc. are vivid, lively and interesting.

In recent years, in some towns, Yangko dance has become a good form of physical exercise for people. Every early morning or evening, people gather in parks, squares, riversides, riverside and other public activity places to spontaneously perform the Yangko dance. They twisted and danced to their heart's content, getting rid of the fatigue of work and forgetting the troubles of life. They not only exercised their bodies, but also added infinite fun to life.
