His childhood life was not happy, and his parents divorced very early. His father, Fred, is a retired police officer in Maryland. He is also an avid football fan and once dreamed of becoming an excellent athlete. The mother is a school teacher and administrator of the Baltimore County Education System. Phelps grew up around a pond, and his older sisters Hillary and Whitney also swam. The eldest sister, Whitney, almost made the U.S. swimming team for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
