The Pulitzer Prize - a multiple journalism, cultural and arts prize in the United States, was founded by the famous American journalist and newspaper operator Joseph Pulitzer. Pulitzer made a will during his lifetime, donating his property to Columbia University, and establishing the Pulitzer Prize to reward outstanding individuals in journalism, literature, and music. It has been awarded annually since 1917. Looking back on the 87-year history, the award-winning works have always been praised as "the most responsible writing and the most beautiful words in the United States." Its journalism award is the highest honor in the American journalism industry and has become the career goal and highest dream of journalists.
The Pulitzer Prize for Journalism is awarded to "American newspapers published daily, Sunday, or at least once a week" and the work published therein. Unlike other Pulitzer Prizes, journalism winners do not need to be U.S. citizens, but entries must be published in a U.S. newspaper published at least once a week.
The selection begins at the beginning of each year. A jury composed of well-known journalists, editors, journalism educators and freelance writers carefully screens thousands of works from all over the country and sends the nomination list to the Pulitzer Prize. The committee's secret sub-committee deliberates, and finally the sub-committee proposes a list of winners to all members, which is officially announced by the president of Columbia University.
Currently, the categories of Pulitzer Prizes include 14 categories: Public Interest Service Award, On-Spot News Reporting Award, Investigative Reporting Award, Explanatory Reporting Award, Exclusive Feature Reporting Award, National Event Reporting Award, International Affairs Reporting Award (including the United Nations), Feature Writing Award, Commentary Award, Literary Criticism Award, Editorial Writing Award, Critical Cartoon Award, Breaking News Photography Award, and Feature Photography Award. The prize money for the Pulitzer Prize is US$7,500, but reports that win the Public Service Award will not receive any bonus. The winning newspaper will receive a Pulitzer Gold Medal.
