Tchaikovsky first mentioned creation in a letter home to his brother in 1874. the situation of the first piece of music. Not long after, in December, the work was largely completed. Tchaikovsky originally planned to give this work to the famous pianist and composer Nikolai Rubinstein for revision and premiere, but Rubinstein ruthlessly criticized the work, which made Tchaikovsky Changed original intention.
This work is dedicated to the German conductor Hans von Bülow. Bulow brought this concerto to the United States, where it premiered on October 25, 1875 at the Boston Concert Hall. Nineteen days later, the work returned to its hometown in Russia, in St. Petersburg. Performed by Gustav Gross (Rachmaninoff's teacher) and Czech conductor Napravnik.
But the Russian premiere failed again because the performance was too fast. Tchaikovsky later described Gross's performance as: "The sound seemed to have been brutalized."
The performance held in Moscow on December 3 was an unprecedented success. The piano soloist was the 18-year-old pianist and composer Taneyev, and the conductor was the original Nikolai Rubinstein, who refused to play, later became one of the recognized authorities on the interpretation of the piece.
