Wuhan Conservatory of Music is one of the nine independently established music conservatories in China and the only independently established higher music institution in central China. The school takes the fundamental task of cultivating people with moral integrity and aims to build a high-level music conservatory that satisfies the people. Wuhan Conservatory of Music has 9 general undergraduate teaching units including the Department of Composition, Department of Musicology, Department of Folk Music, Department of Piano, Department of Orchestral Music, Department of Vocal Music, Department of Dance, School of Music Education, and School of Performing Arts. There are teaching units such as the Postgraduate Department, the Ideological and Political Department, the Public Basic Course Department, and the School of Continuing Education (including Adult Education). It offers 6 general undergraduate majors.
According to the school’s official website in April 2016, Wuhan Conservatory of Music has 3 national-level specialty majors, 3 provincial-level brand majors, 1 national-level experimental teaching demonstration center, and 2 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers. There are 1 national-level "professional comprehensive reform pilot project", 2 "professional comprehensive reform pilot projects" for ordinary undergraduate universities in Hubei Province, and 5 provincial-level quality courses.
In June 2013, Xu Te, a teacher in the orchestral department of the school, guided his student Yang Mingyuan to win the championship in the finals of the International Double Reed Association’s 2013 Young Bassoon Players Competition.
