Should children take part in exams and competitions when learning music?

If parents and teachers regard exams or competitions as tools to help their children grow in music, of course they can participate.

Although the purpose of our piano learning is not all to pass a few levels to get a certificate or get a ranking, we cannot deny the positive role that grade examinations and competitions play in children's piano learning process.

01 Set a short-term goal for your child

First of all, children can set a short-term goal for themselves through exams and competitions. This is a very practical thing.

Too long-term goals, such as taking the XX Conservatory of Music and becoming the concertmaster of the XXX orchestra when they grow up, are insignificant to children. After all, those are things that will happen more than ten years later.

But they know how to deal with short-term goals and have specific cognition.

For example, in order to reach level 4 in piano, children need to learn which performance skills, which songs they can play, and what knowledge they need to learn. Children have a specific direction and know what direction to work towards.

When short-term small goals are achieved one by one, they can gradually accumulate into "big successes", and the children's progress will be more obvious.

02 Examine yourself and provide opportunities for communication

After all, playing a musical instrument is not about "working behind closed doors", but about pleasing yourself and others. Only by having the courage to play to others and getting effective feedback from others can you realize your own strengths and weaknesses.

However, most musical instrument learning involves one-on-one practice, making it difficult to compare horizontally with other students.

Pass the exam/competition. It can allow children to re-examine themselves and understand how they have learned from their peers, and it can also be judged by expert judges.

Moreover, being exposed to the stage since childhood will give you more opportunities to communicate with other children who are learning piano.

03 You will gain confidence no matter what.

A parent of one of Teacher Xiaojia’s students once said:

The first time they go on stage and perform in front of the judges, their children will know how to do it. nervous.

But if you can complete a performance once, your child will gain confidence.

If the result exceeds expectations, you will gain an unforgettable sense of accomplishment.

Moreover, it may give rise to self-confidence in learning piano. Entering the virtuous cycle of "hard work → sense of accomplishment → harder work", you will love music more and more.

When children have intrinsic motivation, parents will become more and more worry-free and effortless.

Finally, Teacher Xiaojia would like to tell all parents of musical children that whether it is a grade examination certificate or a competition trophy, for the child, it is just a proof of talent. They are not the ultimate goal of music learning. It is the fruit picked by children on the way to music, and it is a good tool to prove and test the staged learning results.
