"Traditional Chinese music" is a modern concept. Due to the marginality and intersectionality between music types and music categories in the classification of music categories, there has long been a lack of understanding of the term "traditional music". There is uncertainty in the definition of this concept (even so, it does not affect our overall understanding of Chinese traditional music). Check out the book "Introduction to National Music" (compiled by the China Music Research Institute) and it says that "ethnic music has formed five major categories of traditional music during its long-term historical development: songs, song and dance music, rap music, opera and instrumental music."① This is a relatively broad definition. As people conduct more in-depth research and improve their understanding of traditional music, this definition will become more clear and refined.
