The character of the mythical figure Fuxi

Fuxi is the legendary ancestor of human civilization and is revered as the head of the "Three Emperors". Completely objective and rational, he has no love for all things, but he will never hate all things. In his eyes, there are only laws and regulations. Any human sophistication, whether good or evil, is superfluous, but Fuxi only has feelings for Nuwa.

According to legend, his mother's name was Hua Xu, and she was a very beautiful woman. One day, she went for an outing to Leize and discovered a big footprint during the trip. Out of curiosity, she stepped on the big footprints and immediately felt like she was being wrapped around a snake, and she became pregnant. What is strange is that this pregnancy lasted twelve years. Later, she gave birth to a child with the head of a human and the body of a snake. This was Fuxi. In order to commemorate the birth of Fuxi, the local people changed the name of the place to Chengji, because in ancient times, people regarded twelve years as one period. According to research by historians, Gu Chengji is today's Tianshui. "Hanshu" says: "Chengji belongs to Hanyang County, which is also Tianshui County. The place where the ancient emperor Fuxi was born." Therefore, Tianshui has always been called the "Hometown of Emperor Xi".

According to legends and historical records, as the ancestor of human civilization, Fuxi’s main achievements are: 1. Teaching people to make nets for fishing and hunting, which greatly improved human production capacity at that time. At the same time, people were taught to tame wild animals, which is the origin of domestic animals. 2. Change marriage customs, advocate the marriage etiquette of men marrying women, and change consanguineous marriages to exogamy, ending the long-standing primitive group marriage state in which children only knew their mothers but not their fathers. 3. Written deeds were first made to record events, replacing the backward form of knotting ropes to record events. 4. Invent musical instruments such as pottery xun and harp, create music and songs, bring music into people's lives, and help people "cultivate themselves rationally and counteract their innocence." 5. Divide and rule the areas it rules, and appoint officials to manage society, providing a reference for future generations to govern society. 6. Create an ancient calendar.

However, Fuxi’s greatest achievement is the creation of Bagua.

In the west of Weinan Township, Maiji District, Tianshui (formerly known as Beidao District), there is Guatai Mountain. According to legend, this is where Fuxi painted Bagua. Legend has it that in the ancient times when Fuxi lived, people knew nothing about nature. When it rains, winds, and lightning strikes, people are frightened and confused. Fuxi, who was naturally intelligent, wanted to understand all this, so he often stood on Guatai Mountain, looking up at the sun, moon and stars in the sky, observing the surrounding terrain and orientation, and sometimes studying the footprints of birds and animals and the patterns on their bodies.

One day, he came to Guatai Mountain again and was thinking hard about the phenomena he had observed for a long time. Suddenly, he heard a strange roar and saw a dragon horse jumping out of the cave opposite Guatai Mountain. It is said to be a dragon horse because this animal has the head of a dragon and the body of a horse, and has very strange patterns on its body. The dragon horse jumped onto a large rock in the Weishui River at the foot of Guatai Mountain. This stone was shaped like Tai Chi, and matched with the patterns on the dragon and horse, Fuxi immediately understood, so he drew the Bagua.

Later, the cave where the dragon and horse jumped out was called Longma Cave, and the big stone in the Weishui River was called the Fenxin Stone. If you go to Guatai Mountain now, you can still see these places. Moreover, there are still remnants of stone troughs and stone beds in Longma Cave.

As for the merit of Bagua, it lies in its profound cultural connotation. The Fuxi culture characterized by it still attracts countless scholars at home and abroad to explore and study. Moreover, many contemporary disciplines are deeply influenced by it and draw inspiration from it. It is said that the great German mathematician Leibniz invented the binary system and was also inspired by Bagua.

It is possible that Fuxi, Paoxi, Baoxi, and Fuxi, also known as Xihuang, Huangxi, and Taihao, are all tribal leaders from the Fuxi clan. They are in different eras, but their status They are the same, and both can be called "Fuxi" (because they all come from Fuxi's tribe).
