Living in Yangshuo

I often see people carrying large bags of tens of liters on their backs on the streets of Yangshuo, with tents and moisture-proof mats hung exaggeratedly, and kettles, cups, The sight of the "donkeys" carrying trekking poles and other odds and ends busy looking for an inn. Yangshuo is not a barbarian place. As far as accommodation is concerned, it is no exaggeration to say that the streets are full of them. There are hundreds of guesthouses, hotels, inns and family-style hotels of various grades filling the streets and alleys. Except for the slightly tight accommodation during May Day and National Day, there are a large number of beds available at other times. Of course, West Street is the first choice for a short-term stay. Restaurants and bars are just around the corner. You can fully experience the FB life. No matter how late you are at the bar, you can fall into bed in just a few steps. It’s very convenient. Of course , as an in-depth traveler with a lot of time, staying for a few months is not a long time. Find a quiet small inn or family hotel in the alley, and rent it for a month for only 500 or 600 yuan, and you will have desserts. If you try to make love with the landlord more often, you can often get a meal together.

Parade Resort Hotel: Yangshuo West Street. The only international resort hotel in Yangshuo, although it does not have a star rating, its "software and hardware" are all above three stars. This garden-style hotel has a deep courtyard, green grass, and pavilions. I don’t know, I thought I had entered a park.

Hanas Restaurant: No. 30, Xianqian Street. The four-story building behind the bar is a habitat for rock climbing experts. Maybe an ordinary-looking guest staying in the hotel is an "Ouchi expert" in rock climbing.

Hongfu Hotel: No. 79 West Street. Staying in the ancient Jiangxi guild hall, with the sound of music, the still-preserved ancient customs, and the unique aroma of fragrant tea, you can inadvertently step back in time, as if you have returned to a post station where merchants gathered hundreds of years ago. The hotel is decorated in a simple and elegant manner, and the guest rooms are spacious.

Epworth Hotel: Located on West Street, the environment is good, the price is reasonable, there is a very good bar, and there is a band.

Cultural Hotel: Located on Xianqian Street, it is an old hotel.

California Hotel: No. 35, Xianqian Street, on a branch street of West Street, next to Yangshuo Fire Fox. When I saw the sign of this hotel, I always felt like I had seen it before, and I suddenly thought of the Eagles' "Hotel California" - a popular old song. The boss is also an authentic American. He often sits in front of the store and bask in the sun with a cigar in his mouth and a drink of whiskey. The rooms on the second and third floors of the hotel facing the street are in the best condition and have a large balcony overlooking Xianqian Street. Other rooms are slightly damp.

Chen Gongxing Hotel: Hidden in a small alley at the intersection of West Street and Xianqian Street, the owner is a teacher from Yangshuo Middle School, surnamed Chen. The room condition is average, but the price is cheap.

Yangshuo International Youth Hostel: No. 102, West Street. The conditions and prices of youth hostels here have no advantages, which is different from the international chain "youth hostels" in other places.

Xia Weiyi Inn: This is a small inn full of warmth. The owner is a young man from Northeast China who is handsome and friendly. There is free Internet access in the store, and there are IP phones for making calls.

In fact, there are too many hotels in Yangshuo, and the impression varies from person to person. In many cases, it is subject to subjective feelings. You might as well find an inn to stay in Yangshuo for a day first, and then choose the hotel according to your mood and mood. Regarding the environment, it’s no problem to change to another one.

Eating in Yangshuo

Who can say that "eating" is not an important part of tourism. Today I will tell you about the food in Yangshuo. Yangshuo is a global village, with Chinese, foreign, young, old, meat-eating, vegetarian...all kinds of tourists. Over time, Yangshuo's catering has formed an eclectic form that combines Chinese and foreign cuisine. The restaurants on West Street mainly serve Western food; the restaurants outside West Street only provide Chinese food. As the saying goes, "The mountains eat the mountains, and the rivers eat the water."

The Yangshuo people who have lived on the edge of the Li River for generations certainly love to eat fish. Crucian carp, grass carp, carp, catfish, hairy bone fish, sword bone fish, mandarin fish, there are quite a lot of fish in the river. After talking about it, there are so many. I'm salivating. Let me give you a detailed introduction to some of the most famous features of Yangshuo:

Beer fish: the most famous local dish, you must eat something good when you come to Yangshuo. The method of making beer fish is unique. When cooking, first kill the fresh Lijiang fish without scraping the scales, put it in an oil pan, fry it on both sides until golden brown, and then add a large amount of beer, soy sauce, pepper, fungus, tomato, etc. Condiments, cover and simmer until the flavor is absorbed before eating. Generally, carp is used, which is fat but not greasy, spicy and palatable, with a slightly sweet taste. The price is 18 yuan/jin. There are also hairy bone fish, sword bone fish, mandarin fish, etc. to choose from. These fish have fine meat and fewer spines. Of course, the price is much higher than carp, usually 40 yuan/jin. Be sure to order when ordering. Ask clearly about the price to avoid getting ripped off. In addition, if you don’t like spicy food, be sure to tell the boss your level of spicy food. Among the several food stalls on Diecui Road, Beer Fish is the most authentic. For example, "Sister Xie", "Sister Peng" and "Sister Peng" are more authentic. In addition, beer duck, stuffed snails, stuffed grapefruit, etc. are also the specialty dishes of the food stalls.

Friendly reminder: Don’t believe the restaurants on West Street bragging about how good their beer fish is.

Stuffed snails: Yangshuo is known as having “eighteen stuffed rice”, such as stuffed snails, stuffed tofu, stuffed eggplant, stuffed bitter melon, stuffed grapefruit and so on. The so-called "stuffing" is a unique local way of eating. Simply put, spices, minced ginger and other seasonings are added to minced lean meat, and then stuffed with different carriers to make different "stuffs". In addition to the above-mentioned raw materials, snail stuffing also includes chopped snail meat, mint leaves and a little Sanhua wine, which are stuffed into washed snail shells with tails cut off, and finally put into a pot and stir-fried until they become fragrant. A delicious dish with a spicy and long aftertaste.

Yangshuo Baba: A local snack in Yangshuo, it is usually made during festivals or weddings, and is shared with relatives and friends. Now, as a specialty snack, it can also be bought in the market. The raw materials of dada are glutinous rice, peanuts, chestnuts and sesame seeds, etc. It can be eaten steamed, boiled or fried. However, if your gastrointestinal condition is not good, don’t eat too much. Glutinous rice food is not easy to digest.

Guilin Rice Noodles: The "Skinny Guilin Rice Noodles Shop" next to the Beer Fish Food Stall is basically the best rice noodle shop in Yangshuo, priced at 1.5 yuan/two taels and 2 yuan/30 taels. You have to serve the soup in a bucket yourself. There are also side dishes such as fried soybeans, boiled kelp, pickled radish, etc. on the table. You can add them according to your own taste.

Farmer’s meal: Only when you go to a farmer’s home can you eat pure farmhouse meal. Dishes like local chicken soup and fresh seasonal vegetables are unique to farmers. You can eat freshly picked watermelons in summer, and golden grapefruits in autumn. There is a man named "Lao Mo" in Laohutou Village opposite Moon Mountain. He is a very honest man, a good boy and a good cook. You can call an hour in advance and ask him to stew the chicken soup first. When you arrive, the fragrant soup will be served.

Late-night snacks: hang out at the bar until 11 or 2 o'clock, and stroll to Xijiekou to have a toothpaste. Tangyuan, stewed chicken pot, stewed brain with gastrodia elata, sweet wine eggs, Qingliang, etc. are enough to fill you up, and the price is quite cheap.

Spend time in Yangshuo

Tourists who come to Yangshuo will invariably gather at "West Street". This is a small street only eight meters wide and about 500 meters long. It is paved with local marble with betel nut patterns. After hundreds of years of trampling, it is still dark green and shiny. Both sides of the road are leftover from the Qing Dynasty. The old-fashioned brick houses with cornices, blue tiles, white walls and red windows reveal the unique charm of small southern towns and the simple elegance of Lingnan architecture.

West Street is the most historic street in Yangshuo, the point of contact and integration of Chinese and Western cultures, the largest English corner in China, and a hotbed for transnational marriages. This street with a harmonious atmosphere of Chinese and Western cultures is now a world-renowned street.

The long-term presence of Western tourists has made English the most common communication tool here. The uncle in the antique shop, the girl in the Western restaurant, the aunt who rents a bicycle, and even the old woman selling bananas can all use English to bargain with foreign tourists. If not Seeing it with my own eyes, it’s hard to believe how “international” Yangshuo is. Here, every year, young people interpret the romantic story of the marriage between China and the West. While enjoying the poetic life here, they love passionately. As the saying goes, "Love has no borders."

Antique calligraphy and painting shops, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, Internet cafes and craft shops line both sides of the street. In this remote small town in western China, this 500-600 meter long street attracts more foreigners than Lan Kwai Fong in Hong Kong. They carry huge luggage and come and go. At this time, you begin to realize that the density of "foreigners" here is higher than that of the embassy district in Beijing.

When dusk falls, Yangshuo Bar Street appears in front of you. On one side of the street, antiques and souvenirs are sold. Mandarin, Cantonese, and even foreign languages ??permeate the humid air. The vendors' eloquent tongue allows the banknotes to communicate between ancient times and reality in the night. On the other side, the rich and lively Yangshuo Bar Street flows gracefully in the light, shadow and music, with an exotic atmosphere. The night in Yangshuo is indeed charming!

The bars on West Street all provide catering services, which can also be said to be Western restaurants. Some bars have TVs showing free movies; some have foreign books, novels, classics, magazines, etc.; some have message boards and guestbooks recording travelers’ emotional stories; some have computers with free Internet access; Some have kittens, puppies, small pets... each with its own characteristics.

Red Star Express: Assorted fish, salmon, and pizza are the best. Local steak, black pepper steak, and garlic bread are all top-notch. The boss is a Singaporean named Ali who is covered in tattoos. There are coir raincoats, muskets and ethnic ornaments hanging on the walls, and several foreign car brands are nailed on the bar. The most eye-catching thing is the red five-pointed star at the door. It's a very tasteful bar.

No restaurant: Do you know which restaurant dares to say "no" to customers so many times? There is no restaurant at No. 86 West Street, because what they sell is "nothing". You will understand after looking at their menu.

No hot beer meiyou WARM BEER

No bad food meiyou LOUSY FOOD

No rip-off meiyou RIDOFFS

No bad food Service attitudemeiyou BAD SERVICE

No annoying musicmeiyou BAD MUSIC

No special coffeemeiyou Special COFFEE

No special pizzameiyou Special PIZZA

Except for the “nos” above, the snake meat here is authentic and has local characteristics.

Traveler: Cheese and bacon pizza, beef mashed potato pie, rosary, spaghetti with meat sauce, and Western-style duck in orange sauce are all very delicious. The boss is a very simple local girl named "Xiao Zhang". The wall facing the restaurant is filled with portraits of die-hard patrons of the bar. The wall on the right is densely packed with signatures and messages. See if you can find a small space to sign your name.

Under the Moon Restaurant: The English name is "under the moon cafe", which is a very romantic name. On a summer afternoon, it is very pleasant to order a drink on the balcony on the second floor and watch the tourists on the West Street.

Mingyuan Coffee: The most elegant coffee shop in Yangshuo. The owner is an elegant Taiwanese gentleman and his wife is a virtuous and beautiful Guilin lady. Sit in the shop, taste the fragrant coffee, experience the rich cultural connotation of coffee, look through the mood notebooks left by tourists, and piece together those messy and complicated mood stories.

Lede Restaurant: The original Jiangxi Guild Hall, a very typical Chinese-style building, with a very large square at the door. In the summer, it is full of parasols, which is really beautiful. The boss is a muscular Frenchman who likes Chinese Kung Fu. It is claimed to be an authentic French meal, but the taste is a bit Chinese.

KARST Western Restaurant: Although the restaurant is small, it is warm and cozy. The owner ECHO has a unique charm that brings people together, and he highly recommends the assorted pizzas and gin here.

Hanas Restaurant: A rock climbing-themed bar owned by Shushu, a rock climbing enthusiast from Beijing. The indoor rock climbing wall is a training ground for rock wall dancers, and the bouldering (rock climbing) competition every Saturday night is even more crowded. Come on, come and try it all. Western food is not the strong point here, but Chinese food is pretty good.

In fact, after taking the so-called tourist souvenirs home, 99% of them will be shelved, or even put directly into the trash can, but there is always the urge to buy this and that during the trip. Yangshuo has also prepared countless small shops for you, so that you can always find all kinds of things that make you excited.

T-shirts: The T-shirts here have two characteristics: one is hand-painted T-shirts on site, and the other is cultural T-shirts with various words written on them. The former sells stalls on the street with paintings and drawings. The format is mainly based on the cartoon shapes of customers. Wearing cartoon T-shirts of yourself or your couple when shopping is really flamboyant. However, people these days like to show off their personality. The latter type is mainly sold in stores, and the words on it are all in a non-startling manner, such as "No beer, no happiness", "No money", "I want to find a wife", "I want "Find a husband"... The confession is very straightforward.

CD shops: There are four CD shops on West Street, all of which mainly deal in foreign-language records. They have a wide range of varieties and are not to be missed. In addition, there are also new DVD movies for sale. If you like rock music, go to the one called "MUSIC HEAVEN".

Handicraft stores: The "antiques" and handicraft stores on West Street all sell similar things, most of which are antiques. Calligraphy, painting and painting fans are like copying from a copy machine. There is a Tibetan jewelry store called "Tashi Dele". The owner is a young man with long hair and a cool appearance. However, it is rare to see him taking care of things in the store, and he is like a hands-off shopkeeper.

Batik shop: Buy a pair of homespun batik trousers and show off on the West Street, pretending to be a local; or buy them as gifts for friends, it is a wise choice. 25~30 yuan/piece, can be customized. But remember to wash it several times before wearing it, otherwise you will be "dyed" yourself.

On the way, we passed Langshi Village, a small village that still retains old houses. The Langshi Ferry uses bamboo rafts and can carry up to 3 people at a time. Just take out the ticket you bought earlier. If you find hiking to be strenuous, there are many bamboo rafts on the section from Langshi to Jiumahuashan. It will cost about 40 to 50 yuan to charter a raft to Jiumahuashan downstream.

Jiuma Painting Mountain is the most famous scenic spot in Lijiang River. It is a mountain more than 400 meters high. The colorful patterns on the wall look like a painting screen from a distance, so it is named Painting Mountain. If you look closely at the mountain wall, you can vaguely distinguish the images of horses, collectively known as "Nine Horse Painting Mountain". "Nine horses" means many. There is a folk song like this: "Look at the horseman, look at the horseman, how many pairs of horses do you have? I can see seven horses that win the second place, and I can see nine horses that win the first place." This shows that it is not easy to identify the "horses" in Huashan.

After passing the Nine Horse Painting Mountain, we arrived at the most beautiful section of the Li River. The surface of the river is gentle, the water is clear, and small fish are flexibly shuttled among the clearly visible pebbles at the bottom of the river. There are dense bamboos growing on both sides of the bank. The scenery is so beautiful, natural, delicate... picturesque, but the description in words will seem so poor at this time. Especially after going through the arduous hike first, and then putting your tired feet into the cool river water and looking at the ink scenery on both sides of the river, this feeling is something that those who cruise the Li River on a luxury cruise ship cannot experience.

Walking to the lower reaches of Jiu Ma Hua Mountain, crossing the river for the third time, you will reach Lengfengdu Village. After that, you can continue hiking along the river to Xingping, or you can walk directly to Xingping from the dirt road, but you won't be able to see the Li River.

Arriving at Xingping Town, you can see a sign on the pier saying "20 RMB Photography Spot". This is the prototype of the scenery on the back of the 20 RMB. You can stroll around the "old streets" in the town, where many century-old houses look quaint and distant. Across the old street is the bus station. Take the CMB shuttle bus back to Yangshuo for 5 yuan/person (buses are available until 7 p.m.). The journey from Xingping to Yangshuo takes about forty minutes.

Special Tips

1. When hiking in autumn, the temperature is very high. You should prepare enough water, food, straw hat, sunscreen, anti-heat stroke medicine, snake medicine and other items.

2. Choose a pair of hiking shoes that fit your feet. Remember to wear socks. It is best to also bring a pair of sandals.
