"O Mio Babbino Caro" (O Mio Babbino Caro) is an aria from the 1918 work "Gianni Schicchi" written by Italian opera composer Puccini. The song occurs when the heroine Lauretta is afraid of being separated from her lover Rinuccio, as the conflict between Schicchi and his legal rights reaches its peak. It expresses a kind of inner simplicity and a strong conflict with the surrounding hypocritical and jealous atmosphere, which appears in this comedy that takes place in Florence. The aria was so popular that it even surpassed the opera and became a pure classic Italian song.
This aria is almost a must-sing repertoire for opera sopranos. Famous singers include: Maria Callas, Montserrat Caballe, Anna Netrebko, Chiri · T. Kanava, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Haley Weistra and Angela Kikokiwo. Violinist Joshua Bell once made a recording of this aria, which appears on his album Romance of the Violin. The rock group East Village Opera Company adapted this aria and incorporated it into R&B's performance.
