the answer is I don't know. You don't know the cause and effect of the past and the future, and you are lost.

this is the bitterness of life.

Then, "A few specks of dust have passed in the East", which is also a Buddhist term. As we know, the Buddha was introduced to China from the west, so the Tang Priest's learning from the West is called learning from the West, and the Western missionary is called coming from the East. How many "dust" did the Buddha experience when it was introduced from the West to the East? In the Buddhist worldview, the world is divided into Hanazono Sakura world, middle world and boundless world. In the world, 1, Hanazono Sakura worlds make up the middle world and 1, middle worlds make up the boundless world.

as for "dust", dust is the real world, and dust is a tiny world. No matter which world you are in, you are very, very smiling in the whole universe, just like a grain of dust.

"The East has passed through a few motes", how many motes have to go through, and how many worlds, big and small?

"When should it be on the tens of billions of lotus flowers", when and when? Lotus is symbolic in Buddhism. Every pore in Sakyamuni's body will give birth to a lotus, and there is a Buddha on each lotus. How many pores are there in the Buddha's body? Extremely many, tens of billions. So Li Shangyin said, when can we see that the Buddha is full of tens of billions of lotus flowers?

This is "Lotus meets Buddha".

why does he have such expectations? Because life is bitter, and when the lotus blooms, the world is saved. When can I see so many lotus flowers, and all sentient beings in the sea of suffering, such as you and me, can I really be redeemed by the Buddha?

Our personal loss and pain, you have the pain of unemployment, the pain of lovelorn, and even the pain of losing your loved ones. You will be lost for a short time and don't know how to face it. But these sufferings are very "personal".

But Li Shangyin is different. He lived in the late Tang Dynasty. Their generations grew up listening to the legend of the prosperous Tang Dynasty. The prosperous Tang Dynasty was an ideal, but what he faced was the reality of imminent extinction. It is difficult for us modern people to understand the feelings of Li Shangyin at that time.
