Study in Hong Kong Schools and Course Arrangements Offering Master of Music Majors

There are not many schools in Hong Kong offering master's degrees in music. Recently, some students have come to inquire about this major. In order to give everyone a detailed understanding, we have done some research here. A special introduction to the selection of music schools in Hong Kong. First, let’s introduce the schools that offer music majors:

They are: 1. The Chinese University of Hong Kong

2. Hong Kong Baptist University

3. Hong Kong Institute of Education

The music majors of these three universities have different directions and focuses. Applicants need to understand clearly when choosing, as the background requirements are also very different.

1. The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Department of Music

This major is more liberal arts. The music department of the college. This program is designed for music teachers, arts administrators, church musicians and music lovers to upgrade their musical knowledge. Courses include Western, Chinese and world music culture, pop music and Hong Kong film music, music management and promotion, etc.

This major does not have strong requirements for music performance ability, so the requirements for works are not very strong when applying. It doesn’t even explicitly state that works are required, so the works become supporting materials when applying.

However, this major requires strong practical abilities, such as internships or work experience, and also has high requirements for documents that can reflect students’ understanding of music and clear goals for future employment. Interviews are also required. Therefore, applicants should focus on writing good documents!

2. Hong Kong Baptist University

Department of Music

This master’s program is performance-focused and requires a lot of attention to works. Demanding. It mainly trains students in music performance ability and creativity, and has rich scholarships. The school's emphasis is on solo performance and on providing a hands-on experience in music production. In the past few years, the Hong Kong Baptist University Orchestra has performed extensively in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Baptist University Girls Chorus has also performed in South Korea, Singapore, Canada, Taiwan, Malaysia, the United States, the Czech Republic and Russia. The Hong Kong Baptist University Chorus also toured Switzerland and Austria. The Baptist University Symphony Orchestra performs at least two major concerts each year. Their composers have had major international performances and have won many distinguished awards. This course project is designed to require completion of 30 units, so that the one-year master's program can be completed. Students must complete three core courses (9 units); at least one full module (6 units) and five additional courses (15 units).

If you want to study the piano teaching module or choral conducting module, you should meet some additional requirements, as follows:

Admission & audition requirements for the Piano Pedagogy module

< p>Applicants wishing to take Piano Pedagogy as the main module should prepare a short program of two contrasting pieces:

1 First movement of a piano sonata by Mozart; AND

2 post- 1800 work by Chopin, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Schumann, Brahms, Debussy, Faure, Ravel, Massiaen, Hindemith, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, Scriabin, Stravinsky, or Tchaikovsky

 The performance should demonstrate technical competence, stylistic awareness and musical integrity. 3 to 5-minute selections will be heard during the interview. Performance from memory is preferred, but not required.

Admission & audition requirements for the Choral Conducting module

Applicants wishing to take Choral Conducting as the main module should submit:

 3 a face-to-the-camera video of themselves showing their conducting in any ensemble performance or rehearsal of not less than 10 people;AND

 4 a course list showing their previous training or experience in conducting

 The video should be of 5 to 10 minutes in .avi, .mov, .wmv or .mp4 formats.

Applicants may choose to upload the video to any video hosting website and provide the viewing link, or to submit a DVD-Rom of the video to the Department. The required course list and video should reach the Department?s office within one week after the interview or t

he audition. Applicants will also be required to demonstrate basic conducting skills in the audition.
