He has been interested in music since childhood and likes to sing Kunqu opera. In his early years, he studied piano, violin, Kunqu opera and composition at Chengdu Academy of Fine Arts. He came to Shanghai in 1930 and was admitted to the undergraduate normal group of the National Music College, where he studied composition and harmony with Xiao Youmei and Huang Zi. After graduating with honors in 1936, he worked in film music creation, national salvation singing movement, etc. After the 1940s, he was mainly engaged in music education, and successively served as professor and department director at the National Institute of Social Education, Sunan University of Culture and Education, Jiangsu Normal University, East China Normal University, Beijing Normal University, and China Conservatory of Music.
