What are the characteristics of Musorgskiy's music style?
Musorgskiy's operas Boris Godunov and Huo Fan Hina (1880) for Pushkin's famous poetic dramas are based on Russian history, both of which highlight the image of the people and are models of realistic art, which profoundly reproduce the life of Russians. Its musical language is novel and unique, and its harmony and orchestration are also unique. It is not bound by the music language of Western Europe, but vigorously explores the "wet recitation" style from Russian, establishes a natural harmony system from Russian folk modes and medieval modes, boldly uses the juxtaposition of distant chords, and obtains dramatic harmony effects (see Liu's A Brief History of Western Music), which has a far-reaching impact on later music creation, especially on the establishment of Debussy's impressionism techniques. Its melody writing is also based on folk songs, and after artistic refining, it forms a more exquisite musical structure. Musorgskiy's piano suite "Picture Exhibition" (1874) is another masterpiece of his, which artistically combines music and painting, making music itself have the power to arouse auditory and visual synaesthesia. He also composed more than 60 orchestral fantasia "Night on a Barren Mountain" and the song "Song of Flea" (setting music for Goethe's poems).
