Shanghai revitalization plan,
The name seems to be a construction company,
Actually, this is an electronic band in Brooklyn, new york.
The band was founded in 2005, and it has been 14 years now.
Band members David Liang and Sun,
One is from China who grew up in the United States.
Ha graduated from the department of applied mathematics,
One is a girl from Shenzhen, and later came to the United States to study visual arts.
Both of them became office workers after graduation.

Hip-hop, jazz and electronic music,

Various creations in the past ten years,
Let them accumulate a lot of fans in China.

A film crew followed them to the music festival and traveled around Shanghai.
Self-report Dai Fuliang, edited by Sun.
Dave: The name of our band is Shanghai Restoration Project, and the Chinese name is Shanghai Renaissance Plan. This is an electronic musician group, and now its members are Yun Fan and me. I founded the band in 2005, and it has been 14 years now, and more than a dozen albums have been released so far.
From 20 1 1, Yun Fan began to help the band make visual projections, design posters and album covers, and then gradually joined the band to create and arrange music. Since the album "Life Elsewhere, Her Hometown" in 2022, the music of the band has been composed by us.
We will write songs together, release music, cooperate with other artists and perform everywhere. From the beginning to the present, our music has incorporated many different elements: from classical to hip-hop, jazz, samba, Chinese folk music, electronics, atmosphere and so on, which are all part of our musical chemical reaction.
A person was born in China,
A person was born in America.
Dave: I was born in Kansas and grew up in northern new york.
Although my parents are both scientists, they all like singing very much. When my mother was young, she could play the guzheng and sing Beijing opera. My grandfather plays the flute very well, so I have listened to some Chinese folk music since I was a child.
Outside my family, I also studied classical piano, jazz piano and jazz trumpet since I was a child. I also joined a rock band and a choir in high school.
I studied applied mathematics and economics in college, but I rehearsed in the choir most of the time and performed all over the world every summer. After graduation in 2000, I went to work in a management company, which was rather boring. After a year, I can't stand it.
Later, I started working during the day and worked as an intern in a hip-hop record company in Harlem, new york, at night, learning to do beats with some black musicians.
A few months later, I quit my job and became a musician. I have been in this industry for several years, and I didn't set up my own record company and band until 2005.
Yun Fan: I was born in Fengxian County, Shaanxi Province, China, and grew up in xi and Shenzhen. I studied piano, ballet and painting when I was a child. But I studied finance in college, worked for two or three years after graduation, and then went back to school to study oil painting.
My parents are both southerners. When they were in college, they were assigned to the remote Qinling mountains after graduation. Despite the lack of materials, they managed to moisten their lives.
One year, in Xi 'an, they didn't know where to get a state banquet menu with beautiful photos.
During the Chinese New Year, they really cooked for me and my brother according to the photos of the state banquet and put them out with phoenix carvings. This left a deep impression on me.
Although Dave and I grew up in very different childhood environments, we are lucky that we can keep some emotional tentacles when we grow up. As long as you have tentacles, you will be willing to do different things when you grow up.
Shanghai's revitalization plan, revitalize what?
Dave: The origin of the name "Shanghai Renaissance Plan" is related to my first visit to Shanghai 1997.
At that time, when I first heard Shanghai jazz music in the 1930s at the Peace Hotel, I immediately felt that this music was in the hearts of people with multicultural backgrounds like me.
Later, I learned from a music history book called "Yellow Music" that there was an American black orchestra leader named Buck Clayton and a composer named Chen Gexin in Shanghai in the 1930s, who studied music with a Klitzmo and wrote many classic Shanghai old songs.
Musicians also have different people, who work together to create music regardless of national boundaries.
So when I formed my own band in 2005, I wanted to pay tribute to Shanghai Jazz, who combined the musical elements of various countries in the 1930s and created music that reflected my cross-cultural experience.
Dave quit his job to make music,
There is an album named after a landmark in Shanghai.
Dave: One of the albums, Shanghai Restoration Project (Shanghai Renaissance Plan), was recorded in the bathroom of my apartment. Many samples of Chinese folk music are used in it, but the main rhythm and style are actually hip hop, and some jazz elements are also incorporated.
Listen to the song East Road.
So our earliest fans in China are actually hip-hop fans. In the past two years, hip-hop music has been accepted by more young people in China. Through the adaptation of some China hip-hop singers, such as Xiao Jia and Tizzy T, one of our albums has also been "rediscovered" by some new fans.
The episode of the second album,
Accept a missing dream
Dave: The Story of a City is dedicated to my grandparents. A lot of music in the album is for me to imagine their life in China in the 1930s and 1940s.
Please listen to the song "Acknowledgement"
One of the songs is called "Thanks". In English, this word means to thank, acknowledge and accept. It's for grandparents who died unexpectedly in high school. This is very sad.
When this song spread to China in 2006, I don't know which fan changed its name to "Dream of MissingNo. 1937" and added a new album cover to it. The composer also changed it to Joe Hisaishi, which made this song spread in China for many years with a completely different look.
Ten years later, we took the wrong version of our signed music off the shelves. So, many people left us messages, saying that they recalled many sad things and thanked the song "1937 Missing Dreams" which accompanied "How many sleepless nights we spent".
Break the label with music
Dave: I'm from China. In the United States, whites occupy the mainstream right to speak, and the main ethnic minorities can only hold a group to keep warm and play a game called "identity".
The American cultural environment likes to give everyone a label and put everyone in a box-races, cars, suburban houses and churches are all boxes, and I want to break those boxes.
In 2009, my third album Zodiac was more electronic and experimental, with more musical elements and more boxes.
Listen to the song "Dark Horse"
Among my early works, this one is more personal and my favorite. But its response in the market at that time was not good, because it was difficult to be simply labeled.
But being loyal to your own creation will pay off sooner or later. 20 1 1 When we first met, she told me that Zodiac was her favorite work, which reminded her of the Animal Carnival Suite by French impressionist composer Sang. At that time, I knew that we had a will.
A few years later, Cindy Sherman, a famous American conceptual artist, chose the music from this album as the soundtrack of one of her video works.
In 2022, our director Liu Jian also selected two songs from this album, Dark Horse () and Laboratory (Laboratory Mouse), as the soundtrack of Big World.
Dave (middle) and Yun Fan (right) singer Zhang Le.
At 20 1 1, I also met the jazz singer Zhang Le in Shanghai. In 2022, we released an album Classic, which is an electronic jazz adaptation of Shanghai old songs.
Listen to the song "unreachable love"
In 2022, there was another EP in Shanghai dialect. I didn't expect that the two songs "Bailemen Swing" and "Mung Bean Mash" were particularly popular in Tik Tok last year, but we found that most people who like these two songs just like Shanghainese and are not interested in our band and other works.
Yun Fan: My Shanghai friends like Mung Bean Soup very much, probably because this song reminds many people of their childhood memories. The lyrics are familiar tongue twisters, but careful analysis is actually quite illusory.
For example, children ride wooden horses and shake them to grandma's house. Grandma cooked fish for the baby, but it was not cooked. After eating, the fish was still jumping in the stomach and suddenly jumped on the bridge, much like the reality and unimaginable state.
Listen to the song "mung bean porridge"
My grandmother lives in Zhejiang. In 2008, I went back and took some photos. Later, I made a MV with these materials, and also added some animations. I used classic snacks and toys from the 1980s, such as white rabbit toffee, hawthorn cake, red and white striped tumbler doll, toy piano, wind-up chicken, orange eraser and puzzles, to remind us of childhood memories.
The album Life in Other Places in Her Hometown.
In 2022, Dave and Zhang Le pulled me to write some new songs while preparing for the tour. At that time, Zhang Le was also preparing to leave new york for Stockholm. Before she left, we developed these new songs into a Chinese album Life Elsewhere. This is also my first attempt to compose and arrange music.
Listen to the song "My Illusion"
We wrote an album for artificial intelligence.
Yun Fan: In 2022, Dave and I released an album, R.U.R. The theme of the album is to imagine an artificial intelligence replacing the human world. How do they view the success or failure of human civilization?
The album name is 1920 Czech sci-fi drama "R.U.R", and the word robot is drama. Every song in it is a topic we usually care about.
Listen to the song Alpha Go.
For example, the song "Alpha Go" was inspired by the news that Go artificial intelligence developed by Google defeated Ke Jie in 2022. When I was a child, I played Go and admired it. There are so many ancient chess manuals to learn and how to start. At that time, I felt that my intelligence was not worthy of learning this sport.
Nowadays, the top human chess players are not worthy to play chess with AI. The rapid development of capital-driven technology will not only bring about the disappearance of some cultural meanings, but also produce many moral dilemmas. Many people's careers will also be replaced by robots. What about the lives of these people?
The album R.U.R
The album received a good response, and the American Weiqi Association also wrote to us, requesting that the MV of our song be included in their news briefing and introduced to their members. The album cover has also been selected for the annual exhibition and yearbook of American Illustrators Association and British Illustrators Association.
Listen to Radio Dubarronia International.
In 2022, we released two singles, Dubalonia International Radio and Public Poet.
Some fans say that our music is childish with a little sadness, and I think it makes sense.
The melody of Dubalonia Radio International is beautiful, but it is also a little sad, which reminds me of everyone's attitude towards the future and technology. The sound at the beginning and end is the sound of our cat drinking water. There is a passage in the middle that I imitate the accent of an announcer in the 1980s. Everyone imagines a different era, or a different future. Technology is warm, not frightening.
Listen to the song "Popular Poet"
The song "Public Poet" was inspired by the documentary "California Typewriter".
Dave wrote me a piece of music, which I found very childlike. That kind of mentality and feeling, in fact, everyone had it, but it all disappeared later. I wrote the melody in paragraph B as a very morale-boosting melody. I hope everyone can have that childlike innocence.
partnership
Dave and Yun Fan: We are partners in creation and life. When not traveling, we live in Brooklyn, new york.
Besides making music together, Dave usually handles financial affairs, royalties, music festivals and other management affairs, while Yun Fan is responsible for visual work, including photography, album cover, posters, MV and performance projection.
We have a cat named "Pig Black" and many plants. I like watching independence, watching various exhibitions and traveling.
We both like cooking very much. Dave cooks breakfast and I cook dinner. Dave likes to cook Mediterranean flavor and bake it in the oven. My cooking may be a fusion of China and Southeast Asia. We like to taste different foods. When we returned to Shenzhen, we ate all the Guangdong teahouses.
Usually I like to walk outside, and I often record strange samples, such as the chirping of birds, fans, steam engines, fans and empty cans in the alley.
A few years ago, we were in a forest park in Malaysia. The male tree lizard wanted to attract females, and it made a special one. We recorded it and later wrote them a song.
Listen to the song "library break into houses?" 》
On another occasion, while walking at the Tate Gallery in London, Yun Fan was so tired that he tapped his leg with a rolled-up poster tube while walking. When he reached a corner, the echo was particularly pleasant, so we recorded the sound and used it in the library? "(Ku Break Dance) is in this song.
Our music likes to put many different elements in it, just like spices in food, which may be regarded as a kind of "extraordinary"-we like to explore different colors, textures, shades, levels and balances, and we are willing to perceive the richer and more refined the better, rather than simplifying them.
We write songs, much like the process of giving gifts. You give your heart as a gift to friends, lovers and family. There is nothing special about my future plans. I will continue to make music, write songs and keep cats.

Below? Bund?
The above is related to animal music, and it is about music sharing. After watching animal dynamic music, I hope this will help everyone!
