Wu Qihui was born in Zhongshan City in December 1935. He spent his childhood in Shiqi’s Lion Street. During the Anti-Japanese War, he fled to Enping with his family. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he went to Guangzhou to study. At the age of 17 (1953), he was admitted to the vocal music class of the Central Song and Dance Ensemble (the predecessor of the Central Orchestra). In 1954, due to his excellent academic performance, he joined Luo Tianchan and others early to work. In 1955, he went to the Fifth World Youth Festival in Warsaw, Poland, with the Central Orchestra under the name of China Youth Art Troupe, and won a gold medal in the singing competition with the male octet singing "Jialing River Boatmen's Song". In the 1960s, as a solo performer, he performed in Jiangsu, Sichuan, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Henan, Shaanxi and other provinces and received favorable reviews. He also performed for the movies "Green Wilderness" (musical), "River Crossing Adventure", "Hero" He has performed solo dubbing in "Victory over the Northern Wilderness" and "The Wind and Thunder in the Vast Sea". Wu Qihui once studied Russian opera and songs with Orfinov, a meritorious actor of the former Soviet Union. In 1980, he obtained the Italian Science, Education and Culture Scholarship and studied at the Vellodi Conservatoire in Milan for three years, mainly studying Italian opera and bel canto teaching methods.

At the Vellodi Conservatoire in Milan, Wu Qihui’s first tutor was the famous tenor Mario del Monaco.
