Chen Tingwei was engaged in the clothing business before becoming an actor. In 1984, he participated in the Hong Kong Wireless TVB artist class. The students in the same period included Aaron Kwok, Shao Meiqi, Tang Cuiwen, and Lai Meixian. Chen Tingwei's first drama on TVB was "Mansion". During his five years at TVB, Chen Tingwei filmed more than 10 dramas, but he was always tepid and was not reused. He has been wandering in the second line. During this period, he met Zeng Huaqian during filming. (But their long-lasting love ended in 1995).
In 1991, Chen Tingwei and his godmother Shum Dianxia joined TVB and moved to ATV. In 1991, he became famous with the ATV drama "Winner Takes All" series "Shi Zhikang". In 1993, ATV continued to shoot the "Goodbye Huangpu Beach" series based on the Chinese godfather Shanghai tycoon "Du Yuesheng", which pushed Chen Tingwei's acting career to a climax.
