Xi'an Conservatory of Music, referred to as "Xiyin", is one of the 11 independently established music professional colleges in the country. It is the only independently organized higher music institution in the northwest region, Shaanxi Province. "Domestic first-class disciplines" construction colleges and universities.
The school was founded in October 1949, the same age as the Republic of China. The predecessor was the "Music Department of Northwest Military and Political University" founded by Marshal He Long in the Shanxi-Sui border area. It came into being to cultivate literary and artistic cadres in order to adapt to the strategy of liberating the northwest.
In 1950, it was renamed "Northwestern Art Institute".
In 1953, it was renamed "Northwest Art College".
In 1956, the music and art departments of the school were established separately, and the music department was renamed "Xi'an Music College".
In 1957, the entire college moved to its current location on Chang'an Middle Road, Yanta District, southern suburbs of Xi'an.
In 1960, it was officially named Xi'an Conservatory of Music. Before the reform and opening up, it was renamed Shaanxi Art Institute.
In 1980, with the approval of the State Council, the school resumed its organizational structure as Xi'an Conservatory of Music.
In 1986, it was approved by the Ministry of Education as a national master's degree authorizing unit. In 1987, it enrolled master's students for the first time.

As of June 2020, the college currently has 525 faculty members and 4,636 full-time students. Currently, the school has 11 teaching units including the Composition Department, Musicology Department, Piano Department, Orchestral Department, National Instrumental Music Department, Vocal Music Department, Modern Music School, Music Education School, Dance Department, Ideological and Political Teaching Theory Research Department, and Basic Department.
