Some literary works since the end of 18 are classified as "Gothic novels" because of their common tone and style. Many Gothic novelists emerged in this period. They not only showed the dark side of human beings, but also challenged the orthodox thinking mode of society at that time. They were a mixture of horror and mystery. The typical characters in Gothic novels are vampires. In 1970s, punk, as a subculture, invaded the mainstream culture. Primitive punk comes from violence and powerful subversion. The appearance of "Happy Split", formerly known as "Warsaw", undoubtedly brought this punk movement full of destruction and anarchy into the post-punk era. However, the above is only one type, and there are many better works in history.
music genres
Representatives of early Gothic music such as Siouxsie, Banshee and Bauhaus. They are full of melancholy and world-weariness. Music is often cold and has a fine aesthetic feeling, but at the same time, a large number of discordant sounds that deviate from the melody line are used at the register level, which is an extreme contempt for all traditional music. At the level of lyrics and performance concept, it shows the desolation of life and love. From the rejection of the real state, and then pursue the strange pleasure of the soul abyss. On the stage, she/they appeared in crazy clothes. The Sisters of Charity was founded in 198 1, which was a rebellion against the musical consciousness of several men who loved the Middle Ages. Andrew Eldritch, the lead singer who was once described as "laughing and watching Rome burn into a pile of rubble".
The religious position of the orchestra-for us, cynicism is like the holy water of Catholics. In the 1980s, a pessimistic era was established in pedantic music, at least in the underground culture of Britain and Europe. In the independent music circle at that time, a large number of dark, morbid and strange bands emerged, and their music originated from the endless suppression and curse of life. These bands/musicians, regarded as desperate, evil and decadent, fled from the extreme destructive consciousness of punk to the introverted and dark world in the opposite direction-that is, the 1980s occupied the low-key music space and time of most rock music. The form and evolution of Gothic Rock in the British underground music circle is like a cult reaching out to a troll's palm when it comes to the earth. It attracts the audience through unimaginable and imaginative evil materials, which not only includes the unprecedented creativity of the Holy Spirit in the music field, but also includes the unprecedented stimulating visual experience given by visual modeling. Neutral identity modeling and heavy makeup are not the patent of neo-romantics. Goth seems to be the twin brother of neo-romantic personality, and it is the dark and morbid side behind gorgeousness. Now let's learn about the improved style of Gothic music and other related music genres. EBM (Electronic Body Music), which originated in Belgium, is an electronic, cold and black music. Influenced by electronic bands, such as the power plant band in the Klotlock movement in Germany. At this point, we haven't talked about Germany, which is now the important town of Gothic music. Many German bands are used to the music label DARKWAVE. Pitchfork project is the first German band to set foot in the field of Gothic music. Although their musical style has changed, they have always been a popular group. The first album "Dhyani" is also a classic, typical black music and critical lyrics. The members of Deine Lakaien band have profound musical skills.
In the text of Gothic music, we can taste some imaginary sentences, involving religion, sex, death, despair, Christ and even unimaginable. These are all indispensable parts of Gothic music. Gothic rock covers music under a vague and ethereal external body, and everything is so mysterious. The style of Gothic rock can be said to be inherited from Joy Division, especially the hobby of raising the bass to the tonic position, which can not be completely shaken off until today's post-Gothic dynasty. Those depressing or distorted voices, bass, psychedelic guitar sounds, drums full of accusations, occasional screams like the Ghost Cry, music forms as heavy as a stone mill or as wild as falling apart, and the pale face of rock music: When you feel helpless about life, do you think of what lies behind it? Is it the isolation of soul? Is it the shadow of death? Or a human tragedy? Gothic rock is a kind of abstract expression based on unconsciousness rather than deliberate music subversion. Just like facing the gloomy winter climate, we are invaded by Gothic culture. In the dehumanized post-industrial modern society, we are pursuing an experience of life and death. There is also Barry's musical vision, except rock music, which has always been played in its true colors. In that pessimistic 1980s, Goth, a subculture living in the shadow of mainstream culture, had already crossed the boundaries of music and became a way of life, an attitude towards life and a black country pursued by Goth believers. After the vague 1990s, Gothic rock in the next century has been deconstructed into pieces and dismembered bodies, and the former Gothic patrons, Sisters of Mercy and Missionaries, have already abandoned their followers. However, in today's darkwave movement, under the death ballads, post-industrial noise, dark environment music and neoclassical formalism, we are still delighted to find that Goth is still the most vital and influential genetic gene in these underground cultures. In this revolution that broke through and shattered lust and gender, the so-called ideal model of "androgyny" of Goethe subculture became a beautiful weapon to crush imprisonment. See, the alien who was once regarded as the devil bravely got rid of the pale sky, rubbed off the angel's face and reached the eternal ruthless desire.
In the second half of the 20th century, it invaded the garden of non-mainstream music and became a very different branch of alternative music. If you are familiar with the historical context of new music, you will know that from the late 1970s to the 1980s, some bands were branded as "post-punk cool", "neoclassical" or "new hippie" respectively, and gradually merged into the future Gothic rock school. Goth is a medieval spell. Darkness gave the Goths black eyes, but we used them to look for light. I don't know when the word Goth began to sneak into our lives like a ghost and quietly changed the world with its implied sharpness. Gothic films, such as The Lord of the Rings and Vampire Series, have greatly increased box office, and Gothic music is also recovering and developing rapidly. Even the fashion world has set off a gothic style. Calm reflection, the surge of Gothic wave is not only formed by market speculation, but also something worthy of our aftertaste and reflection.
Gothic culture has its own social and historical background from the rise of the Middle Ages to its comeback today. I think one thing that can't be ignored is that in the 20th century, the whole human race felt more and more profound doubts about the meaning of existence. This development of nihilism flaunts the spiritual characteristics of our times. The trend of theological revival in the development of western culture after World War II is proof. The return of Gothic trend is not so much to cater to people's psychological needs as to say that the public has consciously explored this subculture and further improved it to meet spiritual needs. My understanding of the essence and charm of this subculture is that it is a religion that believes in the aesthetics of darkness and death. This topic may be too big. Let me start with Gothic music.
From the early Gothic or post-Peng music, we can hear that rock and roll experienced several crazy baptisms. By the end of 1970s, punk's rough and simple roar had shown a declining trend and turned to depression and introspection. Probably punk people vent all their dissatisfaction to the society and find that everything is still indifferent, so they begin to despair deeply about the world. While the door of mainstream society is cold and closed, a mysterious black door engraved with medieval reliefs quietly opens to them. Punks broke into this forbidden area once called Goth with rebellious courage, and found the soil for survival and reproduction there. Goth, a ghost that has been lurking for centuries, has finally come to light, and the history of rock music has turned a new page.
Gothic music is obviously different from other branches of rock and roll from the cultural background since its birth. As a musical style rooted in romantic drama and Gothic literature in18th century, its repression of darkness, aesthetic and religious complex of death and almost evil pursuit of aestheticism make many people avoid it. Accordingly, many people who are sensitive to art, especially post-modern art, accepted it ecstatically. Compared with other music forms, Goth is more likely to have a profound and extensive influence. This influence is not limited to music, but can rise to the level of artistic concept and even value system.
Gothic music is often based on the excavated and enlarged human emotional world, and this spontaneous perceptual experience can be improved in the creative process. Therefore, when it acts on the audience again (borrowing the concept of journalism, referring to the receiving group), it will often lead to further aesthetic feelings and thinking space. If a kind of music causes not only artistic appreciation, but also philosophical reflection, even affects the change of personal belief and value system, and even questions the origin and ultimate meaning of life, then its control is beyond words.
It is for the above reasons that I came up with the idea of classifying Gothic music as a religion. Of course, I'm not saying that the core of Gothic music is to promote religion. In fact, it is no more religious than other music forms. At least most bands were not created to spread a certain religious belief, and even some extreme bands explicitly advocated anti-religion. The religion I am talking about here is not a concrete entity such as Christianity, Catholicism and Orthodox Church, but a broad concept.
Dress
Gothic fashion in 1980s consists of crisp mandolin-style semi-acoustic guitar, steady single-note bass lines, simple but fast rhythm, strong synthesizer effect and deep singing. ) developed music style, dyed long hair, pale skin, tight black clothes, pointed leather boots, and a lot of silver ornaments (mostly designed by early European and Egyptian religions). Black motorcycle leather jacket, black skinny jeans, black mesh stockings and black flying sunglasses have become registered trademarks of the Goths.
