The carriage loaded with railway equipment opened a dirt road in the mud, so the Middle East Railway Engineering Bureau gave the wasteland along the river to China people scattered in Harbin. By 1900, "China Street" was the street where China people lived.
Komtrashok, a Russian engineer, designed and supervised this work in May 1924, and laid square stones for the central street. The paving stones are carved and cast from granite, with a length of 18 cm and a width of 10 cm.
On July 1928, Zhonghua Street was officially renamed as "Central Street". Since its birth, Central Street has become a famous commercial street in Harbin. Because there are many foreigners doing business, trade is unprecedentedly prosperous. The rapid economic development has stimulated these businessmen to build tall buildings here.
Central Street is the epitome of Harbin. Harbin's unique architectural culture and the European life of Harbin people are clearly reflected here, and it is called "the first street in Asia".
