History of Tongma levee
The area where Tongmadi is located used to be Gulipeng in the pre-Qin period. During the flood, the rivers and lakes were in chaos, and in the dry season, nine factions were divided, which was called "Jiujiang" by Gong Yu. Later, due to the southward movement of the river course and long-term sediment deposition, rivers and lakes separated, forming large swamps and depressions. From the 18th year of Qing Daoguang (1838) to the 5th year of the Republic of China (19 16), after 80 years, small dikes such as Tongren Dike and Mahua Dike were built from top to bottom, resulting in many breaches. After the establishment of People's Republic of China (PRC), Tongma levee was formed by connecting dikes, but the flood control standard was low. During the 1954 catastrophic flood, overflow breaches occurred in many places. After several constructions, the dike line extended to Guanbatou, Huaining County, and was officially named Tongma Dike on 1963.
